Similar to bingo, players (jugadores) receive a playing board, in a 44 grid, with a total of 16 squares. Whereas bingo cards are filled with numbers, the Mexicano lotería cards, called tablas, feature vibrant pictures of animals, objects, and characters.

A cantor varies their language to describe the cards (cartas) depending on where the game is played. They will use more poetic and light language in a family setting and perhaps a more risqué version in an adult environment. The real fun of the game lies in the skill of the cantor.

Each of the 54 cards has a set phrase that the cantor can use or ignore and invent on their own. Many cantors inject some social or political humor into their descriptions to amuse the crowd.

La Lotería Mexicana is a simple game for all the family and can be more risqué depending on the crowd. Its iconography and distinctive cards have made it one of the most visually appealing Bingo-style games globally.

So I went to a Botanica the other day and saw a pack of Loteria playing cards, and they kind of reminded me of the Tarot. I asked the cashier about them and she explained that it was a game kind of like Bingo.

Step 2: Customize your photos. You can leave your photos as-is, but I thought with different photo backgrounds it would get really busy. I decided to use an app called Photo Lab instead and I paid $4.99 for one month. I added all of my photos into it and picked a filter from the pop art and cartoon section to get the look of my cards. It removed the busy background and silhouetted the people in the photos.

PRINTING NOTE: I do all of my printing through the UPS store. They are awesome! I always email them my projects and they help me out with figuring out sizing, paper weight, and the best price. For this project, the board cards came up to .30 and the playing cards came up to .25 cents. Each packet was 10 boards and 54 playing cards. I originally thought I would need to cut it all to size, but the UPS handled the cutting down. Each set was around $18. I printed enough for the different households in my family.

Lotería is a Mexican card game played in much the same way as traditional bingo, only with unique pictures on the cards that are called out. A staple at parties, the game has attracted artists over the years who have added their own exclusive versions. Games have been dedicated to topics like Millennials and even Selena.

Gonzales said he created one Lotería card a day with relevant words and associations to the pandemic as he tied in his own unique brand of humor to each. Currently, he has around 21 cards that can be found on his Instagram account and purchased on this website here.

When asked what message he hoped the cards would bring, Gonzales said the following: "I think it serves for me, and hopefully my audience, as a reminder of a sense of family, fun and comfort. That there is hope we can all come back together as families and larger communities to enjoy ourselves again and make fun memories."

"I would ask my mother ... 'Are these tarot cards? Can we, you know, tell someone's fortune if we deal them in a certain way?' And she would laugh at me and sort of say no, you know, they're just a game. But I think as a kid I'd always wanted them to mean something more."

"I tried to inhabit her mind and her voice, and I knew that I wanted her to be sort of mute and unable to speak about what had happened to her. And I wanted her to have a dialogue with herself and sort of with a higher presence so that she could have the freedom to evaluate who she was as a person, who her family members were as people and what her past was and what it meant and how she had gotten here. And I thought the cards were a great way to sort of direct her."

Karla Arenas Valenti kept a deck of Lotería cards handy while she was writing Lotería. Whenever she would sometimes get stuck on the plot, she would shuffle her deck and flip the top card to see what image she got. Then she would use that image as part of her next scene!

See what stories Lotería cards inspire your students to write! Have them work in pairs and deal a few Lotería cards to each pair. Ask them to use the cards to create a main character (protagonist), a character that goes against the main character (antagonist), and the conflict they have. For any group that gets stuck, have them take another card and incorporate it into their story. Students can add illustrations to their stories before sharing them with the class.

The board (tabla) has a random pattern of images matching those found on the cards. The announcer gives an improvised short poem or familiar phrase alluding to the image on the card. Satire and references to contemporary events and politics are often a part of the word play involved; in fact, the linking of images to social commentary has existed since the inception of the game.
