Having never managed a google group I'm not sure what options are
available. Is there any way to reduce the amount of spam that gets
through? If moderation is required I hereby volunteer to be one.

An admin can set some options: anyone can join y/n, only members can
post y/n.

Most effective way is sadly probably to moderate requests for new
members and to only let members post.

Really a problem on google groups. Apparently the easiest way to spam
mailinglists.

I would endorse a change to member only posts with new members
moderated.

The group was already set to allow posts from members only.
But I have now changed it so that posts from new members are moderated.
