A factory reset, sometimes called a hard reset or a master reset, will remove all personal information, changes, and data from your device, returning it to the same settings and data that it had when it left the factory.

Please note: most Android devices are secured with Factory Reset Protection. This is a feature designed by Google to prevent your phone from being reset without your permission. If you intend to give your device to someone else once it has been reset, please ensure that you remove your Google account from the device first. Follow the steps under Removing Google Factory Reset Protection for more details

Most Android devices are protected by Google's Factory Reset Protection (FRP) feature. If your device has been reset using buttons, you will be asked to enter your Google password before you are allowed access. This feature is designed as a safeguard to prevent unwanted people from using your device if they managed to reset it without your permission, for example, if it was lost or stolen.

Please note: The steps described in this example should be followed if your device is running Android Nougat or above. If your device is running an older version of Android, you may need to navigate using one of the following paths:

The location of the Factory Reset option in your settings will differ sightly depending on the model and operating system of your device. If you are unsure what operating system your device uses find out how to check which operating system you are using in our FAQ on operating systems.

If you don't receive a code, you have the option to verify by another means. Click Verify with text message or Verify with backup code. If you'd like to use another Galaxy device to verify your identity, click Verify with text message, then Verify with another Galaxy device.

Please note: most Android devices have security measures in place to stop them from being factory reset if they are stolen. One of these security measures is called Google Device Protection. This means that if you have a Google account on your phone, when your phone is reset using the buttons it will ask you for your Google account information. Make sure you know the email and password before resetting. These details will be the same password and email you use for the Play Store. If you're locked out and you don't remember your Google account details, you have a couple of options:

1. If you know your email but don't know the password, use the Google account recovery tool to recover or reset it. Then, use your new password to unlock your Galaxy device. You might need to wait 24 hours (or longer) for the new password to become active.

Please note: it may take a few minutes for your device to reset. Wait while it reboots. It will power on automatically when it is ready to be set up. When it switches on, you will be prompted to go through the steps to set up the device as if it were the first time it has been used.

If you can use the screen on your tablet, you should follow the steps for resetting through the settings menu. The steps are the same for both smartphones and tablets. If you are locked out of your device, you can perform a factory reset using the buttons on your device.

This allows us to take a closer look at what is happening. The data is anonymised and only held for the duration of the investigation. Find out more about the Samsung Members app and how to send an error report through it.

Third-party apps may be the cause of your device becoming unresponsive. Since all third-party apps are disabled in Safe mode, you can check if a third-party app is the reason why your device keeps freezing. First, enable Safe mode to see if your phone becomes unresponsive. If your device does not freeze in Safe mode, it means a third-party app is the cause of the issues you are experiencing.

If your screen keeps freezing or you continue to experience issues with your device, you can try performing a Factory data reset. A Factory data reset will restore your device to its original settings and will completely erase all of your data.

Are you sending your Galaxy phone or tablet in for repair, or giving it to a friend or family member? If you need to wipe your device's data for any reason, you can perform a factory reset. This feature will completely erase your personal information and data to make your phone or tablet a clean slate. You can also reset the general, network, and accessibility settings without erasing apps or data.

You can reset your phone or tablet to its default settings without erasing apps or data. This type of reset will not erase security or language settings, accounts, personal data, or settings for your downloaded apps.

Important: Please save any information you need prior to the factory reset because your personal information may not be recovered. If you have encrypted the microSD card, you must decrypt it before resetting the device. Otherwise, your device will not be able to read the data on the card. From Settings, search for and select Decrypt SD card, and then follow the on-screen prompts.

Hi All, My Samsung Galaxy got slow so I decided to do a hard factory reset, after that I could not log in to my phone. Going thru the setup steps 1st language, 2nd WiFi, 3rd Samsung Account login.I was hoping a factory reset will resolve the issue has in turn stopped me logging in to the Samsung account from the device ('processing failed') . I can log on to the Samsung account from another device. Samsung call center have so far have been unable to help. I actually have 2 old Samsung Galaxy that I am using as paper weight because of not able to login into my Samsung account on the phone, thanks to Samsung for their latest update. I did reset the device again and change the password on the account I even created another account with no luck. Any advice please?! I'd love to recover my Samsung device's back and get them back in good use again.

Hi, Thanks for your response, As I mentioned the phone is stuck at the Samsung account login and I cant go further in to check the device setting and software, it look like Samsung did something to there software that no matter which device you have of there products it will have the same problem ( from all the search on the web) if you decide to factory reset it. also I didn't understand the part when connecting the phone to the PC is there a certain software to use like iTunes with iPhone or what is the purpose of connecting the phone to the computer?

Hi, I was hoping it will help but it didn't have a solution for my phones problem" factory resetting the device and getting stuck on the Samsung account screen (Samsung factory reset protection kicked-in).

One of my phone is Galaxy S5 which I use as a media player and as a stud finder, I did the cache clear but it didn't help, and connecting it to Smart Switch didn't help also because the phone is not fully booted it is at the 3rd step of setup and is stuck there.

Ok, so.. I took a 30 minute nap and meanwhile my 3-year-old must have found my S9+. When I woke up it was turned off (and on the floor on the other side of the bed so hence how I know for sure my toddler messed with it), which I found a bit weird. I started it up again and I'm greeted by the "Let's get started!" page.. So after finding all my passwords and logging in to access all the different accounts it has now begun the arduous process of restoring everything from my latest backup.. Guess I'm involuntarily starting the new year off with a blanker page than I wanted to.

1) You can do a factory reset without logging into the phone. There are situations where you have to do this, eg if you forgot your login credentials or the phone won't startup at all. Your 3-year-old has started the phone in the maintenance mode by simultaneously pressing the bixby, volume up and power buttons, then chosen with volume up and down the factory reset, then started it with the power button.

I dunno.. I find it very hard to believe my 3-year-old managed to reset the device in the "normal" manner. Heck, even I get stuck trying to turn my (now reset) phone off as that also requires me to enter the PIN.

To me, if this was an UNAUTHORISED attempt, why on earth did my unit go ahead and reset everything?! I lost quite a bit of data that for some reason hadn't been backed up. This annoys me so much, not to mention it makes me feel very uncertain about how safe my stuff is on these phones if someone can just go and delete everything without even having access to my passwords.. Especially someone that's just pushing random buttons.
