Let's discuss the pitfalls of slicers, I'm a long standing simplify3d user and having paid to much for the software I prefer to continue using it.

Here is the current link for anyone missing the profiles.

Happy printing :)

Thanks I'll report my findings. I spent a lot of time inside of Simplify3d so it would be nice to continue to use it. Nothing to do with money really.

Moai by Peopoly

Hey guys,

Simplified3d is a great slicer.  There are lots optimizations on retraction and other aspects of printing that are specific for FDM printing. It is what makes it great and at the same time, may not be a good thing for SLA printing.  Since it is proprietary and requires extra cost, we couldn't dedicate testing on it because we cannot change if something doesn't work for SLA.  With Cura, we can make adjustments if something doesn't work for SLA printing as we did that with a Moai edition.  We will try to help get S3D working if we can but at the current stage the focus in on Cura because we can change it if needed.

No worries, I'm just curious about things and I can wait on other non-cura solutions but I'm sure I'll find cura useful for SLA printing. It's exciting regardless.

I found this video that helps to shed light on why Mark says S3D may not be the best option for the Moai.  It appears to give inconsistent results on high-polygon models.  It was enough for that user to notice differences and issues with the prints using FDM printers.  Since the Moai can print much smaller features than a 0.4mm nozzle, those issues will be even more exaggerated.  So it seems like it is definitely best to stick with the Meshmixer + Cura combo for now.

ok, but that video really does not say anything about visual integrity, just the code itself. . . all he is obsessing over is the code, not the effects of compression or actual details. If anyone has printed with a .2 nozzle at 50 microns like I have they would see that S3D provides and exports gcode for the tiniest of details. So I really don't understand what people are talking about here.

I don't think anyone is saying S3D is a bad slicer or produces bad results, just inconsistent compared to other slicers.

I do agree that a lot of differences were negligible.  The issue was, with some of the gcode, it produced as much as a 0.5-0.6mm difference.  Even on a 0.4mm nozzle, that would cause a physical difference in the part.  These would be more apparent on a machine like the Moai with a .07mm spot size.

And at the end of the day, if we are printing artistic prints I don't think this will matter.  It is a little concerning for mechanical parts with snap fits and tight tolerances, but those are (usually) more rectangular with fewer polygons so S3D can probably handle it just fine.

Sure thing, which makes me want to actually test s3d with the moai even more, rather than discount it because some dude decided to nit pick a few numeric inconsistencies, hehe.
