For Immediate Release:

In honor of Haiti’s National Women’s Day, Tèt Ansanm Productions, Medgar Evers College Film & Culture Series, and the School of Professional and Community Development will present the New York premiere of the documentary Poto Mitan: Haitian Women, Pillars of the Global Economy in a celebratory evening of film, music, dance and activism on Thursday, April 2, 2009, 6:00-10:00 PM. The film will be screened at Medgar Evers College’s Founders Auditorium at 1650 Bedford Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11225. As part of the Medgar Evers’ Film & Culture Series and in alignment with our goal to encourage audience members to get involved, this multi-media event will be FREE and open to the public.

Haiti’s image in mainstream and alternative media is almost entirely negative: an endless stream of dire poverty, protracted violence, and extreme fallout from natural disasters. Poto Mitan provides viewers desperately needed historical context and understanding of people confronting these issues. Told through compelling lives of five courageous Haitian women workers, Poto Mitan gives the global economy a human face. Each woman’s personal story explains neoliberal globalization, how it is gendered, and how it impacts Haiti: inhumane working/living conditions, violence, poverty, lack of education, and poor health care. While Poto Mitan offers in-depth understanding of Haiti, its focus on women’s subjugation, worker exploitation, poverty, and resistance demonstrates these are global struggles. Finally, through their collective activism, these women demonstrate that despite monumental obstacles in a poor country like Haiti, collective action makes change possible.

The evening will also feature performances by Mikerline Afro-Haitian Dance Company and presentations by Haitian Women’s Organizations: Dwa Fanm, Fonkoze, Haitian Women For Haitian Refugees, Habetac, Lambi Fund and more.

MOVING MOUNTAINS INC. PRESENTS
“A NEW DAY”
Directed by Jamie Hector (HBO's The Wire/NBC'sHeroes)

APRIL 29TH, 2009
MEDGAR EVERS COLLEGE
Founder's Auditorium
1650 Bedford Ave., near Crown St.  Brooklyn, New York 11225,  7pm doors open at 6:30pm
Admission free for this debut performance, recommended for young audiences, no infants please.

Older brother bring your younger brothers; Sisters bring your sisters.

A NEW DAY, is a hip-hop coming of age stage production where a family of young brothers face the pressure to be men where only the strong survive.  They have a common love for  hip-hop but can’t even agree there.  Lotto has a strong rep, but Chance is mistaken to be a weak, for believing in principles of non-violence.  Frisco, the neighborhood “hot head” is always looking for a fight and finds Chance to be an easy target as long as Lotto stays out of it and Conz just makes things worse.

A NEW DAY looks at the pressure Chance has to ultimately face not just from Frisco, but from in his own family when even his brothers turn against him and his friends grow tired of his peace talk.

When pushed, the consequences are deadly, and this production is how it all goes down…

A New Day is filled with a cast of fresh, raw talent.
