Summary: Human-wildlife conflict (HWC) has been a recurring issue in the state ofUttarakhand, India. While local issues are usually addressed, the driversresponsible have not been investigated adequately, and thus human-wildlifeconflict management measures have remained only partially successful. Wildlifeconflicts here involve serious crop & property damage as well as directthreats to human life, invoking negative responses from people that oftenresult in retaliatory killing of wild animals. In the state of Uttarakhand, themajor species involved in HWC are leopard, elephant, wild pig, nilgai and bear. While leopards have been involved in the most direct human attacks and deaths, elephants also play a major role in human attack in addition to significantlevel of crop damage. The Motichur and Haridwar Ranges of Rajaji Tiger Reserve,as well as the Haridwar Forest Division are among the hot spots of HWC inUttarakhand.  Leopard density in theMotichur Range is 33/ 100 km2, and the elephant population in the area isaround 350 animals, having exceeded carrying capacity.  Although conflict situations and problemsvary across the areas and season, the animals that are linked to human deathsand severe loss of property and crops require immediate attention. While theissues have largely been understood based on conflict occurrences, the need forwell-organized baseline data and species-specific hot spot mapping of conflictis yet to be addressed.  As of now, HWChas been managed with providing immediate compensation but this strategy onlyserves a limited purpose. Based on the examination of the issues, it is proposedthat future efforts here need to be substantiated by examining the habitat andhuman-linked drivers of HWC to ensure long-term solutions to this problem.
