Dear People and Wildlife group,

I would like to introduce you the ENCOSH project, a recent international platform to foster the exchange of knowledge, skills and experiences between various stakeholders worldwide to tackle Human - Wildlife interaction issues: https://encosh.org/en/

As part of this project, our core team is currently creating Working Exchange Groups (WEG) of different wildlife groups (e.g. Bear, Elephant, Primates, Wolf, Jaguar & Puma...) or specific Human-Wildlife Conflicts issues and solutions. You can find further details on the role of such groups in the enclosed document.

Would some of you be interested in joining a WEG? Alternatively, please feel free to share with me any contacts who could be interested in joining such groups.

Finally, you are all invited to join the platform for searching or publishing initiatives, sharing any feedback and experience or using the forum. Sharing any initiative would be particularly appreciate so that others could learn and inspire from it.

I remain available for any further information or guidance you may require.

Best regards,

Dear Tommy,

I would be interested in learning more about this – we (our key managers in Tanzania are copied here) might be able to help form a WEG around the topic of payments for conservation, specifically looking at how performance payments might play a role in incentivizing human-wildlife coexistence. I am looking forward to learning more,

Best wishes,

Greetings Tommy,
Thank you for reaching out to network with other wildlife protection organizations, all of whom strive to minimize conflict between humans and wild species. If not already on your list, I would suggest contacting: 1. Liza Gatsby with The Pandrillus Foundation who works on behalf of endangered Drill Monkeys in Nigeria and Cameroon (headquarters in Portland Oregon).
2. Shirley McGreal with International Primate Protection League who works to protect monkey and ape species from exploitation/abuse in captivity and in the wild (Somerville South Carolina)
3. Olivia Conrads with Esperanza Verde works to rehabilitate indigenous wild species back to freedom (Pacullpa Peru).

Please let me know if you want more info regarding any of them as I know them personally to varying degrees. Best of luck in your efforts to preserve and educate, Lesa Miller in Los Angeles CA

Dear Tommy,

I have just submitted an initiative for our work titled "WILDLIFE FRIENDLY™ CERTIFICATION AND SPECIES-SPECIFIC CERTIFICATIONS FOR PRODUCTS AND TOURISM". We do have multiple programs addressing individual species and contexts however our work is global, as are our core Certified Wildlife Friendly™ labels, so I have submitted this to encompass our work globally across all key species.

I would be happy to join any working groups relevant to certification, eco-labels, or market-based approaches that address human-wildlife conflict. Also happy to be a resource for any other working groups (e.g. species-specific groups) interested in learning more about what we do.

As always you can learn more about our work at www.wildlifefriendly.org and we accept certification applications and inquiries on a rolling basis.

Best regards,

Marissa

Greetings,
This is Dr. Bahar Baviskar and I am working as President/Wildlife Veterinarian at Wild-CER, a registered conservation organization in Central India. I will be happy to be part of the working group. We are dealing negative interactions between human and wildlife and are working with tiger, leopard and sloth bear especially. However, recently we have started new module for capacity building of the front line staff and veterinarians through our training program ' Wildlife investigation through forensic techniques'. This is being used in the man-animal conflict cases for the detail investigation.
I hope I can contribute from my side and learn from the other group members.

Looking forward to hearing from you.
Thank you
Regards
Bahar

Dear Tommy,
Thank you for the invitation to join such an interesting platform related to the hot issue of human-wildlife interaction to live in harmony. I am working at Wolaita Sodo University, south of Ethiopia as an academic staff teaching various courses related to wildlife ecology, conservation, and management, as well as doing research and training services to the nearby protected area management staff and the surrounding community on the human-wildlife interaction, conflict, and resolution issue. So, it is my pleasure to join the platform with experts worldwide.

Dear Tommy,

I would be very interested in participating and contributing to WEG. I currently have a number of projects investigating both ecological and human dimensions of carnivore-livestock interactions in South Africa (and potentially soon to be Australia too) and my focus is always on methods to enhance coexistence.  I look forward to hearing more about this initiative.

Kind regards

Kat

Dear Tommy,

I am very interested in being involved in a WEG. The UK Squirrel Accord partnership I manage works on red squirrel conservation and grey squirrel invasive species management - these both involve human-wildlife interactions. One key area we are researching is an oral contraceptive to offer an alternative, humane, effective and non-lethal option for managing grey squirrel populations, which could also be used for other mammal species. An recent update can be read here: https://squirrelaccord.uk/news/blog/researching-a-new-hope-for-grey-squirrel-management/

Best wishes,

Dear Tommy Gaillard,

I am a researcher currently working at Wildlife Institute of India, Dehradun. I am interested in Human-Wildlife Interactions, relations, negotiations, conflict, etc. I have worked in the high altitudes of India, Ladakh where I looked at how presence of humans affect animal space-use when resources are scarce. At WII, I am working on a project which aims at developing a landscape management plan for tigers in the central India.

I would be more than happy in joining this group.

Dear FNK,

Many thanks for your feedback and motivation to contribute, it is great to read.  I am sure your experience on Human - Wildlife interactions will be relevant and appreciate for such a project. As a  individual member of ENCOSH, here are some opportunities to start contributing:
  • Registering and completing your profile to share your background/interests with the community: it might be very useful to interact with other members;
  • Publishing initiatives that could improve Human - Wildlife interactions for which you have experience with: cf. https://encosh.org/en/publish/
  • Sharing initiatives you are aware of but with no experience:  https://encosh.org/en/share-an-initiative/
  • Sharing your feedback and questions to initiatives already published in the platform: cf. https://encosh.org/en/search/ ;
  • Participating to forum (e.g answers or your own questions): https://encosh.org/en/forum/ ;
  • Suggesting any ideas to improve this platform/project according to your needs;
  • Sharing this platform to your network and inviting them doing likewise.
Besides, there is still an opportunity to join a Working Exchange Group (WEG) which are currently being created. These are whether focusing on wildlife groups (e.g Bear, Elephant, Felid...) or specific issues or solutions. Let me know whether you would like at some point joining of forming a WEG.

Don't hesitate if you have any suggestions or questions, I will do my best to get back to you!

Encoshely yours
Tommy
