PHM Kenya - advocacy on TV and prep for PHA4

This is a brief email to update you on recent PHM Kenya activities. Minutes of our meeting from September are attached for your information.
Pumwani Maternity Hospital crisis
PHM Kenya held a press conference on 5 October at Silver Springs Hotel, Nairobi, to highlight the gaps in information about the crisis at Pumwani Maternity Hospital. We emphasized that this crisis demonstrates long-standing weaknesses across the health system and that civil society engagement is critical for a lasting solution, particularly in the discussions about privatization of health care, which can undermine health equity. Our panel presentation was televised on KTN and K24 news shows, in addition to Jata TV and other stations, as well as carried in radio and print. Additionally, a live interview was conducted by K24 (see the screen grab below).

Our next step is to bring community voices to the debate around the failures at Pumwani Maternity Hospital – watch for another press conference this month. Those interested in contributing and joining should respond quickly!
People’s Health Assembly 4 (PHA4)
PHM Kenya is coordinating with PHM Tanzania and PHM Uganda, to maximize on the sponsorship available for active members who are able to attend PHA4. There is a small balance of funds available to top up travel costs for those who have support. PHA4 is the next People’s Health Assembly after the one held in Cape Town in 2012, and will take place on 15-19 Nov. in Savar, Bangladesh. PHM Kenya is joining other country circles in Africa to present new challenges in the struggle for health in the context of Universal Health Coverage. We are also working with the Health Workers for All Coalition (HW4AC) to host an event about human resources for health at PHA4.

PHM Kenya strategy meetings
Members of PHM Kenya should block two dates for our strategy review and planning: 29 October in Nairobi and 4 December in Homa Bay or Nairobi, before and after PHA4. We will focus on how we will engage in advocacy, activism and movement building around the country and the region.

PHM Kenya continues to hold two meetings each week, focused on preparations for PHA4 and our ongoing activism with the media concerning Pumwani Maternity Hospital and the Kenyan health system. Join on WhatsApp to keep up with current activities.
