A Soft Launch for UHC in Kenya

Kenya is rolling out universal health coverage in 4 counties as part of a pilot program ahead of the goal of total coverage by 2022.

County selection was needs-based: Machakos county, for example, has the highest number of road accidents in Kenya while the more sparsely populated Isiolo county has high maternal mortality rates. The pilot program will include inpatient and outpatient care as well as public health services like mosquito net distribution and door-to-door immunizations. Experts hope that lessons learned will help in national expansion.

“Attainment of UHC will not be a destination but a continuous process,” says President Uhuru Kenyatta.
