Kuala Lumpur (Sept 10) – Businessman Tan Koon Swan, the president of the MCA in the early 1980s and founder of Multi-Purpose Holdings, will react soon for his “wrong prosecution” by the Singapore government during the Pan-El crisis in the mid-1980s.
In the just-published book “Glenn Knight, The Prosecutor”, the writer Glenn Knight -- who was the famous prosecutor then -- confesses to having wrongly prosecuted Tan in 1985 and in the chapter on Pan El crisis, he mentions his apology to Tan Khoon Swan – a fact hitherto unknown for 27 years.
Glenn slapped Tan with 15 charges after the collapse of Pan-El Industries which caused the Singapore stock exchange to halt trading for three days. Among others, Tan was alleged to have committed criminal breach of trust (CBT) and share manipulation, and a guilty finding sent him to Singapore’s Changi Prison for 18 months.
The incident not only forced Tan to quit as MCA president but also the collapse of his huge Malaysian-Singapore business empire which comprise at least three listed companies then.
And posting bail for Tan while waiting for the trial of the century was Robert Kuok, Malaysia’s richest man. Due to this high profile prosecution, Glenn was awarded the Public Administration Gold Medal by the Singapore government. But in 1990, Glenn himself was charged for CBT and later jailed in Singapore.
The wrong prosecution of Tan was splashed on the front pages of two leading Chinese newpapers – the Nanyang Siang Pau and Sin Chew – on Monday. Nanyang said Glenn discovered his mistake several years after Tan was released and he had apologized to Tan.
When contacted on Monday morning, Tan told theedgemalaysia.com he would respond to the wrong prosecution later today.
He said on his handphone: “I am in Hainan (China) in the midst of a meeting. I will call you back later today to talk about this matter.”
Asked whether he would sue the Singapore government, he said: “I am in a meeting. I will call you back later.”
In previous interviews with this writer, Tan did say that he felt “cheated” during the Pan-El crisis.
He said he was advised by “people in power” to admit guilt to get a light sentence which would amount to a fine, but he was horrified to hear the jail term when the verdict was read out in court.
But as a born-again Christian, he had tried to forgive all those who had caused agony to him.
Tan is now a property developer with a lot of developments in China. He has been made an “honorary citizen” of Hainan for his contributions there.

DESIDERATA:
Now the ball is in the Singapore government's court. Maybe the loose-but-oiledmouthed Dr Mahathir Mohamad can have another field day "embellishing" the incident/s? Knowing that Dr Mahathir didn't/never/does not have any love for his former counterepart Lee Senior (Kuan Yew), TV3 could join Singapore Channel News Asia in tying up the two giants of SIN-MAL politics for the television debate of the year 2013? Ah, UMNO can hold the rights to sell tickets at RM1,000 per tic and hold it at the largest venue in Kuala Lumpur? With a Return show (Like English Premier League football you have one at home and a second away game eh?)

The Cancer Warrior, CT Chang leaves us today.

CT Chang

Today is a sad day for me.  My internet friend CT Chang chose to leave this world to day, September 11, 2012.  It was on this fateful day three years ago that the doctor gave him only 6 months to live.  He fought on and lived for another three fruitful years to the day.

Chang started journalising his battle with cancer in his blog "Upekha", and it was through his blog that I came to know him.  During the period of three years, Chang had shown his unwavering courage fighting cancer with alternative treatments, as the conventional treatments could not help him. He had gained great admiration for his tenacity and strong will power. He had helped many others personally as well as through the internet.

If you wish to know more about CT Chang, please read my article as a tribute to him, in Hubpages.

Loudmouth low class carrier operator Tony Fernandes is getting a real slap of his face, on top of a run for his money. The NADI-Lion Air new joint venture hybrid budget airliner Malindo Airways is set to be a major airlines in the region.

KUALA LUMPUR | Tue Sep 11, 2012 3:37pm IST

(Reuters) – Indonesia’s Lion Air will set up a new low-cost airline based in Malaysia, it said on Tuesday, a challenge to dominant budget carrier AirAsia Bhd as Southeast Asia’s growing middle class fuels demand for cheap flights.

The new carrier, Malindo Airways, will begin flights between Indonesia and Malaysia next May with a fleet of 12 Boeing 727 aircraft which it plans to expand to 100 planes within a decade, Lion Air President Rusdi Kirana told reporters in Kuala Lumpur.

The move is the latest in a burgeoning rivalry between Lion Air and Malaysia-based AirAsia as strong economic growth and rising incomes spur rapid passenger growth among Asian low-cost carriers, helping to shield Western planemakers from the malaise gripping developed economies.

“Malindo is an opportunity to tap a robust market that is right for the entry of a new low-cost carrier,” Malaysia’s Prime Minister Najib Razak said at the launch event.

AirAsia (AIRA.KL) has made inroads into Lion Air’s home market, announcing in July it would make its first major acquisition by buying Indonesia’s Batavia Air.

AirAsia chief executive Tony Fernandes said in May his group was looking to list its Indonesian operations by the first quarter of next year as it moves its regional base to Indonesia.

In contrast with other budget carriers, Malindo Airways will have in-flight entertainment, extra legroom and free light meals, as well as low fares, Kirana said. Its hub will be Malaysia’s new budget terminal, KLIA 2, which is currently under construction.

“I should be selling at what AirAsia is selling, or I may sell lower,” Kirana told reporters, referring to ticket prices. He did not say how much Lion Air was investing in the new carrier.

Lion Air has a 49 percent stake in the airline, a joint venture with Malaysia’s privately held National Aerospace & Defense Industries Sdn Bhd, which holds the majority 51 percent

Despite Asia’s increasingly crowded budget carrier field, Kirana said there was still a need for “two or three more airlines with specific business models” by 2013.

The two firms’ rivalry is also part of a battle between dominant manufacturers Boeing (BA.N) and Europe’s Airbus (EAD.PA), which are favoured by Lion and AirAsia respectively.

Lion Air ordered 230 Boeing short-haul jets worth $22 billion last November to take its total orderbook to more than 400 planes. Sources told Reuters last week that AirAsia is close to a deal to buy up to 100 Airbus jets, closely on the heels of its record order for 200 last year. ***************

Lion Air would be the largest airlines operation in the region. CEO Pak Rusdi Kirana is hinting that they could offer cheaper tickets but with much better products, compared to AirAsia. Naturally, the now bullish Malindo Airways would be a major threat against AirAsia, even when Fernandes says its not.

‘Malindo Airways will not pose threat to AirAsia’

AirAsia Chief Executive Tan Sri Tony Fernandes has welcomed the new low-cost airline in Malaysia, Malindo Airways, but dismissed that the new budget carrier will be a potential threat to AirAsia Bhd, Asia’s largest frills-free airline.

He said the formation of Malindo Airways clearly indicated the growing importance of budget carriers in the global aviation industry, particularly in Malaysia and in the Asean region, in tandem with the Asean Open Skies Policy, which will come into force in 2015.
“I welcome Malindo Airways’ establishment. AirAsia had always wanted Asean to be opened up. This is a good step,” he told Bernama.
Fernandes quashed claims that Malindo Airways would force AirAsia to bow to pressure due to the keen competition in Indonesia.
He said neither the airline nor the joint-venture partners of Malindo Airways posed any threat to AirAsia’s vast airline network in the Asian region.
“The new airline is not an issue for us in AirAsia. We have competed in a country like Malaysia which has a strong airline such as the Malaysia Airlines (MAS).
“We also have in hand a strong team for AirAsia, AirAsia X and AirAsia Indonesia. I am proud of what we have and we will continue to grow.
“We are building a global brand and I don’t think that something like this (the new airline) will slow us down,” added Fernandes, who is now based in Jakarta, overseeing AirAsia’s Asean region operations.
AirAsia Malaysia is now headed by Aireen Omar.
National Aerospace and Defence Industries Sdn Bhd (NADI) and PT Lion Grup today signed a joint-venture agreement to form Malindo Airways which will begin operations on May 1 at KLIA2 in Sepang.
The signing was witnessed by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.
The budget carrier will take off with a fleet of 12 Boeing 737-900ER aircraft to destinations between big cities in Malaysia and Indonesia before expanding to other Asian countries.
Malindo Airways is considering offering low fares, even lower than AirAsia, in addition to the in-flight entertainment systems and in-flight connectivity in all of its aircraft. — Bernama

*******************

Malindo’s initial investment of 12 world’s most popular and reliable airlines workhorse, the most recent B737 model from Boeing; B737-900. It could fly 160-170 passengers from this region to East or West Asia in a single hop. In time, it would not be a surprise if Malindo Airways starts to fill-in the gap on point-to-point markets, against Malaysia Airlines’ or Garuda’s traditional hub-to-hub operations.

A promising bullish market for budget airliners, but offering better products against current low regional low cost carriers would probably see Malindo Airways expand to 100 aircrafts within ten years.

As a full service airliner with state-of-the-art entertainment system (coupled with a business class option) but at budget ticket price, definitely the highly popular regional low cost carrier AirAsia  would be a lesser choice for passengers. Malindo will be operating from KLIA2 from May next year. At this point of time, AirAsia has yet to confirm their date and schedule to move their operations from KLIA LCC Terminal.

This joint venture is very strategic for Malaysia Airports. Lion Air soon will be operating 220 B737s and would be the largest airlines in Indonesia. Eventually it would number 400. The market for the seventh most populated nation in the world is tremendous. If some of this market is being channeled through KLIA for a third destination, it would add more business for Malaysia Airports and indirectly, Malaysia’s tourism earnings.

Lion Air’s growth and potential is really promising. The airlines is serving Jakarta-Jeddah sector with 500 seater B747-400s. As the market grow, it is expected that Lion Air acquire the suitable aircrafts which include wide body to serve the right destinations. This is unlike AirAsia which intercontinental AirAsia X is already showing problems and has been canceling what deemed to be lucrative routes such London and Paris.

Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Mohd. Najib Tun Razak’s strong endorsement to a competitor against AirAsia, Malindo Airways

Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Mohd. Najib Tun Razak officiated the new hybrid-budget airlines this afternoon. It is a demonstration of a strong endorsement, in the spirit of Malaysia-Indonesia brotherhood and regional ASEAN co-operation ahead of the Open Sky policy beginning 2015.

“This will fortify the airlines business in the region”.

This is also a strong message to the arrogant and incurably annoying Fernandes for his grandstanding upon the ‘AirAsia-Malaysia Airlines share-swap’ last August where the latter was suckered to pay RM 18 million for lousy Queen’s Park Rangers sponsorship.

This serves Fernandes well. Especially after Fernandes’s sordid attempt to do an ‘Airport Spring’ against Malaysia Airports, which is a GLC under Khazanah Holdings Bhd. last December. And recently in May when the ‘share-swap’ signed on 9 August last year was overturned, Fernandes threatened to take his operations to Jakarta. It is obvious soon to be largest airlines in Indonesia has better faith in Malaysia compared to Fernandes.

This is a third slap on Fernandes’s face as he tried to grow bigger into the Indonesian carrier’s market by acquiring a much lesser carrier Batavia Air.

Fernandes also failed in his attempt to hoodwink everyone for his failed Formula One team, once upon he wanted to be known as Team 1 Malaysia and ‘Lotus’.

The acid-test for Fernandes is straight forward. AirAsia placed a huge order of 200 A320 Neos. If any aircrafts from this order is passed over to another carrier, is a sign that the confidence for their ultra-bullish market growth projection is threatened. AirAsia X already has problems with their order of A330s.

This is the way forward which Fernandes lost. For those who are bullish about AirAsia under Fernandes’s watch, the ‘good old days’ are numbered. Prime Minister Najib has not shown this much support for AirAsia, nor Fernandes. Not even when Fernandes was grand-standing for the  Batavia Air acquisition.

Solar energy in China

Posted: 11 Sep 2012 06:52 AM PDT

I think the Proton heavy inudstry should consider some simple transportation for the people. The CM of Penang, it is reported he is so gao (cleaver), can consider riding this sort environmental friendly vehicle to office or meeting the people.

Why the government in Malaysia is not keen on the solar system. They still wanted to build the nuclear plant in the south of the peninsula.

All money talks, you know, I know, we all know.

It is time to shut down the Independent power stations thus only we can achive the this objective, other wise, all these cronies would keep nursing on the big brother and the tax payers are going to lose forever.

Now take a look of the development in China, it is going solar.

Democrats, God, and Jerusalem - The fiasco at the DNC was a reflection of Obama’s worldview by Thomas Sowell

Posted: 11 Sep 2012 06:01 AM PDT

Who would have thought that God and Jerusalem would become controversial issues at this year’s Democratic National Convention?  Previous Democratic party platforms had mentioned God and referred to Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. After both were initially missing from this year’s platform, someone apparently realized that this was likely to raise questions about Democrats that they could ill afford to have raised in an election year.
So the convention faced a vote on whether to restore God and Jerusalem to their party’s platform. Rather than risk a roll-call vote from the delegates, the chair called for a voice vote. The voice vote sounded too close to call, but the chair called it anyway, ruling that those wanting God and Jerusalem restored had the necessary two-thirds vote.

This added an element of farce to the proceedings, but politicians are usually hardened against any sense of shame. More was involved than a passing tempest in a teapot. Democrats were already politically vulnerable on the issue of not respecting religious freedom, because of the Obama administration’s heavy-handed forcing of Catholic institutions to finance contraception, against their own religious principles.  Jerusalem raised very different questions. In the real world, there is no question that Jerusalem is the capital of Israel. That is where their national government is located. But in the murky world of international politics — and especially in the never-never land of the mythical “Middle East peace process” — the Palestinians’ demand that Jerusalem be their capital has made liberals in general, and the Obama administration in particular, skittish about recognizing Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.

Nothing that would call attention to Obama’s policies toward Israel is likely to quiet the fears of Jewish voters in America, especially as regards the threat of a nuclear Iran, whose leaders have openly and repeatedly proclaimed their desire to wipe Israel off the face of the earth. From the beginning, Barack Obama has tried to downplay the threat of a nuclear Iran. At one time he said dismissively that Iran was just “a small country.”

In fact, Iran is physically larger than Japan, and its current population is slightly larger than what the population of Japan was when the Japanese dealt a devastating blow to the United States with its attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. A nuclear Iran can do a lot more damage to Israel than the Japanese did to the United States. Moreover, it is well on its way to being able to produce more than the two bombs that were enough to force Japan to surrender in 1945. Israel is in a desperate situation — and there is no way that Barack Obama does not know that. 1   2   Next > National Review

Samseng UMNO Dikenalpasti Dalam Kawad Cam

Posted: 11 Sep 2012 06:11 AM PDT

Selain Maisuri, turut sama membuat kawad cam, petugas pejabat KEADILAN, Abdul Hadi Suhaimi.

-KD

A New Malaysian Government

By Dr. Azmi Sharom

This article is written by Dr. Azmi Sharom, a law lecturer, whom I had the pleasure of hosting as a panel speaker at one of out BUMmeetings. He commands a lot of respect among his peers and students, and is a person who refuses to accept what is going on, who feels the injustice not only for the Malays as he too is a Malay but for all Malaysians. So ENJOY, spread the word around!...YL, Desi

Actually we will vote PR because We Still Love BN. After all it was started by great and honest leaders of the past. Its for the good of BN that we vote for PR and for better future for the people at the same time. What happens, when PR become New Government: We have a New Goverment with Less Experience inCORRUPTIONS and SCANDALS..... good for people We have a STRONG and RICH Opposition with 50 years Experience in CORRUPTIONS and SCANDALS. They know the ins and out of corruption and scandals, so they can better check the PR government........ also good for people and for BN BN will do their BEST to EXPOSE those who CORRUPT, because BN has 50 years of experience inCORRUPTIONS Final Result: RAKYAT MENANG TWO party system is........... BORN We vote for CHANGE....... because we LOVE.......... MALAYSIA "The world is a DANGEROUS place not because of people who do EVIL, but because of good people who look on and DO NOTHING ABOUT IT" Albert Einstein All (including former) Malaysians must know - By Dr. Azmi Sharom If you have already watched this (and I'm not surprised at all), just pass it on.... Dr. Azmi Sharom- All Malaysians must know.

Malaysia has never been an Islamic State as our Constitution is very specific on it. It was the Mental Mamak (our equivalent to Singapore 's MM) who lied all the way when he declared Malaysia as an Islamic Country and therefore State in 2001. Lim Kit Siang immediately corrected him but he being the person he is insisted that he was right. Jokers like Ling Liong Sik, Samy Vellu and Lim Keng Yaik of course did not object and quietly agreed with him and so did the other BN leaders. This mamak has damaged our country through and through.

MM also passed the Syariah Law in Selangor in 1995 with the help of MCA, MIC, and Gerakan.

Ask MCA, MIC and Gerakan why they support an Islamic State and passed laws to support it, and now complain that DAP is supporting an Islamic State, when DAP has never ever agreed to do so.. The evidence is beyond doubt, it is in the public domain, ask them, the shameless ones, do they have an answer? Worth listening to this recording. Our constitution is the most altered, amended, and modified constitution in the whole wide world. We must never ever let UMNO get back their 2/3rds majority ever again. If they do, then our country will go to the dogs. UMNO will again start changing the constitution like there is no to-morrow. It will be changed to suit UMNO, just like they changed the constitution/rules/laws to allow for gerrymandering of the consituency, where a rural constituency with an electorate of 5,000 voters is entitled to vote for one MP/DUN, whereas in urban localities, an electorate of 100,000 can only vote for one MP. What sort of democracy do you call this? Can someone out there enlighten me. Whether you're pro-BN or pro-opposition, please, do not, in your wildest dreams ever allow UMNO their 2/3rds majority. Don't ever let Malaysia go the way of Zimbabwe , Somali, or Myanmar .

YES, We want PR not because We Love PR, We just want a CHANGE !

DPPM: Teguran Sultan Johor perlu diberi perhatian penting

Justeru, katanya, DPPM mendesak kerajaan supaya mengkaji balik pemberian kontrak pembekalan kelengkapan tentera.

Hamidi.
