Is Calx likely to be further developed ? I noticed that it depends on
JavaCL, while Penumbra depends on LWJGL. Since I would like to unify
the two and use gl/cl interop, it would be better to use LWJGL for
Calx, since LWJGL now supports OpenCL.

Yes, I do plan on revisiting Calx, though probably not anytime in the
next 3-4 months. I have no attachment to JavaCL; if you create a
branch that uses LWJGL I'd be happy to use that instead.
