Anybody know where I can get a job using Penumbra all day?

Obviously, none exist right now. But with the runaway success of
Minecraft [1], which also uses LWJGL, has got me thinking about what
prevents someone from doing something similar with Penumbra.

The big one is making a standalone installable package. I haven't
looked at this at all; I know LWJGL is supposed to make it pretty
easy, though. The other obstacles are just missing or weak
functionality: vertex buffers, text rendering and layout, the shader
translation functionality.

In my mind, a 1.0 release would have an easy set of steps that would
allow someone to create an installable game/app using Penumbra, in
addition to any other features. I've been kind of neglecting Penumbra
these last few months; hopefully being able to work on Aleph during my
day job will give me some breathing room.

When I saw MineCraft was using LWJGL I thought pretty much the same thing :)

The improved numeric performance in Clojure 1.3 probably makes this more feasible also.

What about applets? Is it possible to deploy Penumbra in the browser?

Yes, it is. Unfortunately, I don't think LWJGL has the magic
certificate, so every time an applet loads the user has to say yes to
the "can this applet have its way with your computer" prompt.
