Pentaho - hardware requirements

Hello everyone, we are evaluating the use of Pentaho for data transformation for a client (a bank). However, one of the constraints we have been given is that they do not want to install an application server and do not want to use a database. This is a platform I am not familiar with, so I would like to ask:

1. 1)What does it mean to install core components of Pentaho? What are the artifacts?
2. 2)What is produced when I create a mapping with Kettle?
3. In relation to the previous questions, is an application server required?
Is an database server required?

I'm using Pentaho PDI Community Edition, and it doesn't require a database to install PDI. You can if you'd like connect to a database to track logging, but it is not required. If you want to install the Business Analytics (BA) tool it would be best to install it on a separate server, but I don't believe that is required either, but I don't use the BA application.
