Ive been working on a piece for wind quintet and was wondering if it was necessary to build in rests so that players can take breaths. I heard it can be hard for wind players to play for a while without stopping and taking a quick breath. Is this something I should consider/worry about?
Some players develop excellent circulat breathing which is a technique forwind players to hold very long breathes without passing out. It takes quite sometime to do it and you really don't want to write a piece which requires that technique all the time.
My advice - for windmusic sing your lines to estimate the breathe required. At worst you will overestimate the amount of breathe they need - so you can ask if they could connect the phrases in one breathe or hold the note longer when working with the performer. Post it on works in progress in the meantime to ensure you don't write anything ridiculous.
yes, please please please, I'm in a concert band and I've played both flute and oboe, which are pretty much opposites in how long they can last. Based on how much resistance in the instrument there is, flute would last 4 bars at 60 bpm and oboe at the complete other end would last around 8, again, that's at 60 bpm. This is taken largely from personal experience and is different for everyone, but this is usually the norm.
double tounging, triple tonguing, quadruple tonguing, tonguing upside down, triple tonguing with a perfect sound quality while constantly being stabbed at the lungs, circular breathing...aka, it's hard, never assume the player can do it.
but also, if there is more than one person on that instrument, they could find away to work it out. Usually if there's something that must be constantly repeated, you can dovetail it, (clarinet 1 plays 2 bars, clarinet 2 plays 2 bars, clarinet 1 plays, etc)
professionally I only play 1 wind, the sax, but sometimes I play clarinet and requires less breath, but the problem is not how long the breath can last, sometimes I mistakenly take more breath of what I need (used to the sax) and I could hold very long, the problem is not if I have remaining air or not, the problem is that I have to keep breathing, so I have to release is and take new breath, so is not only matter of how long breath can last, for a trombone player a breath could last for 3 minutes in a recorder, just the guy must breath...
yeah, but that's in a band setting, not for a wind quintet, that's when one person breathes when the people around him don't, so it sounds like they're not breathing, but it won't work as easily in a wind quintet
On the far right side you will see the icon for "Cloud" down load. Press this instead. You will get the circle showing progress which will eventually become solid, then the word "Downloaded" will show.
Although this works in theory, you have to make sure you did this to all the movies you have on your device. I have a dozen or so on my iPad. I never know what I want to watch and one should have to upload movies to your device just to have to download them. WiFi should NOT be needed to view existing content on your device. Whoever made this decision should be fired and forced to live in a land of now entertainment.
I was on chat/call with Apple and they claim to not have heard of this before. I first went into Settings>MY NAME>iCloud>Photos and they asked that I select "Download and Keep Originals" which did nothing to help. Next Next I went to Settings>General>iPad Storage> and look at how much was being used for the TV App (68GB) and then they asked me to select the TV menu in Settings and click on "Offload App." I then did a power off and started back up and went to the app store to reinstall the TV App. That did NOT solve the problem either. They also suggested that I "Reset Network Settings" Settings>General>Reset which I did not do.
The last thing the suggested was restoring the iPad to factory settings and seeing if that solves it. It did, for now. Of course, I had all of my photos on the cloud so I didn't lose anything...at least i don't think I did. Now the frustrating part of trying to get all of my apps back on. Some of which are no longer available in the App store. :-(
I don't see where anyone has ever replied with anything of help. I too had this happen and feel your pain. What's the point of having this "support" if no one is actively supporting? I'm having an error message for downloading pics to my laptop and same thing. No help! ?
You don't need full internet just a "wifi" connection I tested earlier this week and was able to play the home movies after connecting to Southwest's wifi (without paying for the internet service) the connection itself allowed it to play. I connected to my wife's phone acting as a hotspot and got the same result of it allowing to play. I was able to shutoff the connection to save battery afterwards and it allowed it to finish playing.
The same trick should work with purchased content. As long as you are online the first time you try to play it then iTunes or your device should be able to validate your use of the protected content. You then shouldn't have any problems playing it while offline.
Same problem. I bought at least all these years 8 Ipads. Some older I donated. I have two now. Movies don`t play in my flight or without WiFi. I spent a lot of money renting and buying movies and TV Shows. I have been mad about! Trying other like surface, , my Samsung phone,
I discovered this the hard way. Long flight, ready to relax and enjoy my movies. No Internet connection and no movies. Watching movies while offline is one of the main reasons why I and many people own an iPad. I have spent a lot of time trying to figure out how to solve this "problem". The simple answer is you can't fix this "problem", because it isn't a problem. I believe this has been put in place intentionally for reasons mentioned in this thread, copyright protection, etc, whatever. I just want to watch MY owned movies on My owned device.
However there is a workaround. Download the VLC app onto your device and transfer your movies to VLC using file share in iTunes while your device is connected. Your movies will play while offline, every time.
Perfect. Whoever did this stupid difficulty should be fired. I made my mind to buy only tv show because they work well without internet during the flight. If is a long flight I have the option to watch with UNITED but they talk so much and I have to wait until they stop to say so many blabla in many languages and then I eat and go sleep. Apple or Itunes are not giving us what we bought. It shows downloaded , my internet is premium as well, but until the flight gets higher, the internet is not going to help. URRRR! I'm mad! Thanks everybody!
This article is intended for violinists who are interested in learning how to hold the violin without using a shoulder rest, or using their shoulder for support. It is based on my own observations, experience, and some of what I have learned from my teachers. There are as many ways to hold the violin, as there are violinists. If you feel comfortable using a shoulder rest or your shoulder to assist you while playing the violin, then by all means, proceed as you are already. This is just one way for violinists that are interested in learning to way to play the violin without a shoulder rest, to do so.
Try to balance the neck of the violin between the lower proximal phalanx of the left index finger and the around the joint between the distal and proximal phalanx of the left thumb. The ideal height of the violin should be about parallel to the ground and you should resemble the form of an archer or gunman taking aim.
Some of you may have collarbones deeply imbedded or very close to your neck. This may be the case especially in children. If so, even a collared shirt may be too thick for the violin to rest firmly over the collarbone. If your violin consistently slips off of your collarbone, try wrapping a cloth around the chinrest and lower bout of the violin for extra friction, or, a piece of chamois (or other fabric with grip such as carpet liner).
Try to keep your eyes fixed on the instrument while you perform to watch the bow and/or fingers. It is like looking down the barrel of a rifle when you are taking aim. If you take your eyes off the target, you might miss, or likewise, if you are driving, and take your eyes off the road, you might get into an accident. Violin is a highly complex and sophisticated multitasking operation, and you should use all of your focus and senses to perform it.
Keeping the violin high also balances the entire frame of the body. When the violin starts to sag, the body follows with it, and starts to put stress on one side of the body. Become sensitive to this and adjust as you play. A good place to start is with the feet. Think of the placement of your feet as the foundation to a building or the roots of a tree. The rest of the body should remain balanced, centered, and upright on top of that.
I find I almost entirely agree with you, except that I do not find a shoulder rest effects the sound, and I do not see why one can't be just as free and relaxed, and loose, when using one. It's really horses for courses.
However, you are not being dogmatic about it, and you are obviously a very observant and experienced player and teacher. Thanks for your contribution, and I would say that it always remains food for thought. We should not have closed minds, and experimention will always continue with me, as long as I can continue to play.
