Whenyou are trying to password protect or encrypt a drive, folder, or file, you must know BitLocker. It is the built-in Windows encryption technology that protects your data from unauthorized access by encrypting your drive and requiring one or more factors of authentication before it will unlock it.

Windows 11/10/8/7 requires a BitLocker recovery key when it detects a possible unauthorized attempt to access the data. Your BitLocker recovery key is a unique 48-digit numerical password. During the encryption process, BitLocker could ensure that a recovery key was safely backed up prior to activating protection.

What if you have a computer with BitLocker encryption. You haven't used this PC for a long time and you forget the recovery key. Where can you restore the recovery key? There are several places that your recovery key maybe, depending on the choice that was made when activating BitLocker.

Sign in to your Microsoft account on another device to find your recovery key. If you have a modern device that supports automatic device encryption, the recovery key will most likely be in your Microsoft account.

If you can't remember the password, what can you do? There are some critical data stored on the drive that you absolutely have to be able to access. You can access the BitLocker drive with the usual password. Although BitLocker asks users to create unique, strong passwords, many users still use simple words or phrases to protect their data and user accounts.

BitLocker recovery is the process by which you can restore access to a BitLocker-protected drive if you cannot unlock the drive normally. You can run BitLocker recovery if you meet one of the following conditions:

There are data recovery tools available that can extract data from encrypted BitLocker containers. One such tool is EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard. This powerful tool can access files in the BitLocker containers and restore data from an encrypted drive. This is an effective method, but you still need to unlock the BitLocker container prior to running the data recovery software.

The software will start a quick scan for deleted files and perform advanced scan for more lost files. When the process completes, you can apply the "Filter" feature or use the search feature to find the lost files in a short time.

After previewing the file, click the "Recover" button to restore deleted or lost files from BitLocker encrypted partition on Windows. You can choose a cloud storage, such as OneDrive, Google Drive, etc., and click "Save" to save your recovered files.

It's indeed a good idea to password-protect sensitive data on your hard drive, SSD, USB, or other devices. Things could be different if you forget or lose the recovery password. Make sure that you have a copy in a safe place or are using a password that you will not forget. You can also back up your password with a password keeper.

Where to find the BitLocker recovery password? As you might know, the recovery key can be stored in different places, including your Microsoft account, USB flash drive, a TXT file, and even a paper document. If you forgot BitLocker recovery key accidentally, you can try finding it from these places first.

This is because the BitLocker encryption is a full-disk encryption method that only can remove the password, but the formatted data is still encrypted and needs the BitLocker recovery password to be decrypted. Moreover, the data you recovered from the formatted drive is just certain incomprehensive texts.

In addition, the BitLocker password can be stored on your local computer in a BEK file named BitLocker Recovery Key. To find that, you can press Win + E keys to open the Windows File Explorer, then type *.bek in the search box and hit Enter, and wait for the scan to complete. Then you can check the search results to see if the recovery key is found.

Although BitLocker warns users to set a unique and strong password for the encrypted drive, some people may reuse their familiar passwords or commonly used passwords. So, if you forgot BitLocker recovery key, try recalling all these usual passwords, including Microsoft account password, Google login password, email password, etc. If luckily, you can find the correct BitLocker recovery password to unlock the encrypted drive.

BitCracker: It is the first open-source BitLocker recovery password cracking tool for different storage media like hard disks, USB flash drives, SD cards, etc. It can try to find the correct BitLocker password or recovery through a dictionary attack.

Passware Kit: It is an easy-to-use password cracking tool that can decrypt password-protected documents and full disk encryption. In addition, it can decrypt various types of file formats and reveal browser, mail, and network passwords.

Thegrideon Software: It is an advanced password recovery utility for BitLocker encrypted drives as well as BitLocker to Go protected removable devices. This tool uses several password search attacks to get its job done, including dictionary attacks with modifications, brute-force attacks, and advanced mixed attacks.

Some users reported that they find the BitLocker Pin recovery by performing a force recovery through the CMD. Here you can try this on a local computer or remote computer. Choose one according to your situation.

Step 2. Select the location where the BitLocker recovery key document file is stored and click on Scan. If you stored the file in the USB flash drive, make sure you plug it into your computer first. Here we take the Desktop location for example.

Step 4. Select a directory to store the recovered file in the pop-up wizard and click on OK to confirm the location. Then follow the on-screen prompts to finish this process.

I chatted with Microsoft for hours and tried multiple links on multiple devices on different networks and they all gave me the same error. Microsoft reps said they were able to log in and view the keys just fine. They said to contact dell but dell support for an out-of-warranty device seems like a waste of time imo.

Unless you can get the keys then you are stuck. You wipe and reinstall. Hope the friend has a backup of any valuable data. The range of possible places bitlocker key is held is described here: Finding your BitLocker recovery key in Windows - Microsoft Support

If you've lost your password and your recovery key, then there is no way for you to access the data protected by BitLocker. If you could, under these conditions, then that means that anyone could and therefore the whole point of encrypting your drive is defeated.

Encryption isn't some programmatic "lock" that can just be "bypassed" or easily changed like local user credentials. It is a process by which the data you have stored - the actual virtual ones and zeroes themselves - get changed in such a way that it is impossible to restore them to their original state without the key. Additionally, encryption keys are designed such that it is mathematically infeasible for an attacker (and, at this point, "an attacker" means you or anyone acting on your behalf) to re-generate or derive the correct key on their own.

Having forgotten the password, and not being in immediate possession of the recovery key, your only chance at unlocking the drive is if you backed the key up to your Microsoft Account or cloud storage (e.g.: Dropbox, OneDrive). Backup of the key to your Microsoft Account can be done during setup for Windows 8 and later, but is not supported by any built-in mechanisms for Windows 7. Since you're using the latter, you would have had to first backup the key to an offline storage device (e.g.: USB drive) and then transfer it up to OneDrive or another cloud storage provider.

I recently changed Intel Rapid Storage Technology settings on my Dell XPS 13 9300. To my surprise when I rebooted I found I needed to input a BitLocker recovery key. But I had never been prompted to set up BitLocker before this. It was bought from Costco with windows already installed. I followed Microsoft's guide to recover my key but couldn't find any though my XPS device was indeed connected to my Microsoft account. I checked two other Microsoft accounts and also found no luck. I contacted Microsoft support and was told that some work or school organizations may possess the key even though I purchased and set up the computer with my own personal accounts. Any help is appreciated.

It seems that your Dell XPS 13 9300 features "BitLocker Device Encryption," which is automatically enabled when you sign into your device with a Microsoft account or join with a corporate domain account. It's different from the better-known "BitLocker Drive Encryption," which needs to be manually activated.
