to Pennytel - Android App
Hi,

Something is wrong somewhere. I am using HTC Desire HD (Mobile Num:
04x).

Before I got the handset, I had some contacts in PennyTel Smart Dial
already. I also have a PennySIM (Mobile Num: 04y) which I use to make
calls using those smart dial numbers. As I got Desire HD, I am
planning to stop using my PennySIM. I downloaded the Android PennyTel
app.

Step1: Synch the contacts using app. I then logged onto the PennyTel
portal and noticed that the app added new entries in Smart Dial only
if there isn't an existing entry for the number which is perfectly all
right.
Step2: I checked the "Smart Dial Enabled" option.
Step3: Dial an international number from my contacts. In my contacts,
I have stored the number as +AB where AB is the country code (e.g.
+91, +1, +41 etc.). When I dial this directly, it doesn't go through
PennyTel!!! I recently came to know about this after spending $150 on
calls :( ....But I have noticed one thing, if I go to Call History and
then click on any international dialled number, it tries to call the
Smart Dial number. But unfortunately, the call doesn't go through. The
call ends few seconds after it starts to dial. There is no voice
response....nothing at all which can tell me what is going wrong.

So, to summarize, I have 2 queries or bugs to report:
1. Why doesn't the call goes through PennyTel when I directly dial my
contact but it does when I dial through Call History?
2. Why doesn't the smart dial number connect when I dial through the
call history? It shows me that it is dialing the smart dial number but
it doesn't connect. Why?

Please let me know if you need any more details.

Hopefully you will be able to provide resolution for these problems
sooner so that I can discard my PennySIM!

Looking forward to hear from you soon!

I am not sure the issue but i should prob remove this app now that pennytel no longer have a contract with optus.  I am not sure they even use smartdial any more if they have a new system or if the smartdial numbers have changed.

I think i will remove it form the market in the next few days unless someone really wants it to stay as it is not really maintained anymore and pennytel were meant to have their own app out by now anyway

Thanks Chris for the ultra-fast response! :)
I wish PennyTel did their work at your speed :(
This is really unfortunate :(

sadly pennytel have always been a pain to deal with it is one of the reasons i gave up on this project and the other reason was i found cheaper deals elsewhere for what i needed without all the busy tones.  Pennytel had a great idea they just failed in execution and support.

You can do almost everything my app did with other apps now so you can give them a go as well some people in this group or on whirlpool.net.au can help you out if you can't find them

Will it be possible for you to share your other source of "cheaper deals" for the benefit of whole community? :)

And any particular app you are referring to?

Btw, you are right regarding PennyTel. Their idea was good but not their execution. Even I have decided to move out of PennyTel as their rates are just tripling after 16 May. Unfortunately I still have around $25 left in my account and they are telling me that if I close the PennySim, I need to use that amount through VOIP. They aren't going to refund it :( .....their Softphone doesn't work at all so I had to install X-Lite on my PC. I think for now I will have to use the X-Lite after cancelling the PennySim. But that means that I can make calls only from home and not during office hours :( ....so I am also looking for other cheaper deals using which I can make call from my mobile.... I had a look at RebTel but couldn't find out any feedback about it in Australia. It is almost similar to PennyTel. But I am not sure.... might give it a try if I didn't find anything else.

just use the web callback you can use that anywhere any time.  Personally i am in a similar place with a lot of credit on my account due to there stuff ups and i use web callback to make calls where ever i am.

I don't know the names of the apps as i don't use them but i have then them listed before both on this group and on whirlpool.net.au.  there are voip apps, calling card apps that work with smartdial and there may be an sms app but i am not sure on that one.

IF you want a refund talk to pennytel support.  If they wont give it to you then just tell them you will take it up with the TIO.  I got most of my credit back but still have $30 on my pennytel account but got over $70 back.  Watch it when you leave them make sure you remove any cards etc as they start billing you huge amounts when you move your sim from them and then you have to fight to get it refunded to your card not your account.

I am with TPG now as i have Internet with them.  $!4=15 a month gets me a 1gig of data, $300 of calls, and text and $300 to other TPG users.  Pennytel for sim and data was $20 plus $5 calling plan plus call costs meant it was close to $30-40 a month.  for me $15 is much better but i mostly use data and not too many calls.  Depends on your usage.

If you have reception i think the new pennytel may not be bad as i think you will find it is all direct calls over mobile network not smartdial etc but not sure.

There are a heap of good deals for mobiles out there now it all depends on what you want and where you want to call.

oh! this Web/Ani callback is really good thing.... had a look at it earlier but didn't know what it was for.... no documentation or user manual from PennyTel!.... i just tried it after googling how to use it.... best of all it doesn't charge me for the local calls & i can still use my PennySim credit..... i think i can now close my PennySim.... thanks a lot mate! :)

I will now take care of asking PennyTel to remove my credit card details from their system once i ask them to stop my PennySim. It is their stupid system which doesn't allow me to remove the card details. I can only update it to a new card detail. From their perspective it is correct but from customer perspective it isn't. Anyways, thanks for the warning mate.
