People have had issues with the pilot number in the past and there was
a fix added some time back that fixed smartdial for some phones but
maybe your model needs it as well.
the 2 things that could cause this are
1. the contacts phone number is not in a format i expect so i stuff it
up trying to make it a valid number for pennytel
2. the pause character is different on your phone. Going from memory
here but i think the default character for a pause on android is 'p'
but some of the UI's put on top of android have changed it to a ',' i
think it was. You can always test this yourself by making a contact
that starts with the pennytel pilot number then has a p or a , and
then their phone number. See if one combo works over the other.
It would not mater how i let you enter the number you would be facing
the same issue. I just felt it would be easier for people to have an
app do it in the background for any number they dial and that they can
dial anyway they like from using a contact to entering a number on the
dial pad.
