What is Holi?
Holi festival commemorates the victory of good over evil, brought about by the burning and destruction of the Demoness named Holika. Holi got its name as the "Festival of Colors" from Lord Krishna, who liked to play pranks with His friends by drenching them in water and colors. This is a traditional festival of joy through which people are immersed in absolute bliss! The Festival of Holi is officially celebrated in spring, on the month of Falguna. The legend usually associated with Holi revolves around the wicked king Hiranyakasipu whose son Prahlada was a devotee of Lord Vishnu. When the king tried to prevent his son from worshipping Lord Vishnu, with the aid of his sister Holika, who had a boon that made her immune to the effects of fire, his plan backfired and Prahlada escaped unscathed while Holika was burnt to death. The UPenn South Asia Society's Symposium on the Awareness of South Asian Issues, or SASAI, is designed as an intercollegiate symposium to create awareness and encourage activism not only among South Asians, but throughout the minority community. We invite all students from Penn and the greater Philadelphia area to join this event which features numerous discussions, speakers and cultural activities. The overarching goal of this symposium is to view political and social issues through a South Asian lens and to create awareness that many similar issues affect all minority communities. This year, we will be flying in Dr. Bala Ambati, the Guinness book of world record holder for becoming a doctor at age 17, for a speaker event on March 26th, from 7pm- 8pm in Huntsman G50. On March 27th from 5pm- 9pm , we will be having a series of discussions on South Asian political, social, and cultural
topics. On March 28th from 2pm- 4pm, we will have a SAS Olympics where teams of 5 will be compete in South Asian games for a South Asia Society Gold Medal. Following the SAS Olympics, a Charity Gala will be held to raise money for SEEKHO, an organization working to promote a sustainable culture of learning in rural India. Weekly Sunday Pujas

LOCATION: Graduate Student Center Basement between 36th and 37th and Locust
Each week, HSC/YJA organizes a traditional puja service for the UPenn community through the generosity of the OMkar foundation. This hour-long ceremony includes the performance of a Ganesh puja, the recitation of shanti mantras, meditation, bhajans and aarthi. Come join us for this great way to reflect, relax and recharge during the Spring semester.
