QUOTE OF THE WEEK

Bhagavad Gita: Chapter 15 Verse 5

One who is free from illusion, false prestige, and false association, who understands the eternal, who is done with material lust and is freed from the duality of happiness and distress, and who knows how to surrender unto the Supreme Person, attains to that eternal kingdom.

The 10 Avatars of Lord Vishnu

Lord Vishnu, the sustainer of the Universe, came down to Earth in ten incarnations or the Dashavatara to save the Earth and mankind in times of great danger and calamity. The ten avatars of Vishnu, according to scripture, are Matsya (fish), Kurma (tortoise), Varaha (boar), Narasimha (man-lion), Vamana (dwarf), Parasurama, Rama, Krishna, Buddha, and Kalki. In the earlier incarnations, Lord Vishnu rescued mankind from demons that were said to terrorize Earth and cause great suffering. However, in the later incarnations, mankind faced natural disasters, unjust kings, wars, corruption, and unrighteousness. We are currently in the epoch known as Kali Yuga where there is a great decline in morality, senseless violence, and overwhelming human greed.  Thus, the word avatara literally means ‘crossing-down’ and signifies the compassion and responsibility that Divinity has towards the world and its happiness, regardless of the day and age. In the Bhagavad Gita, Lord Krishna promises, “Wherever and whenever there is a decline of righteousness and a predominance of unrighteousness, there I manifest myself, for the purpose of restoring righteousness.” The Dashavatara symbolizes the evolution of consciousness as Lord Vishnu first takes the form of an amphibian, then animal, then human and then an enlightened and advanced being. The last incarnation of Vishnu is Kalki which has arguably not appeared on Earth yet. Scriptures say this avatar of Vishnu will arrive when humans are on the verge of causing mass and irreversible destruction to themselves and the world in which they live.

Join HSC/YJA Board for our Sunday Puja

Join us for HSC/YJA Puja if you have time for some refreshing prayer and meditation.

"My first time attending Sunday puja was a welcome reminder of home for me. The quiet atmosphere was not a time to let my mind wander, but a time to refocus and rejuvenate."

An Evening with Rajiv (Kevin G from Mean Girls!)

The Pan-Asian American Community House's PEER (Promoting Enriching Experiences & Relationships) program, in collaboration with the UPenn South Asia Society & the International Affairs Association, presents: An Evening with Rajiv Surendra. Join us in welcoming Rajiv, an actor most famously known as Kevin Gnapoor in Mean Girls, to campus on Monday, April 21st (8-9:30pm) in Houston Hall of Flags. Since Mean Girls, Rajiv has been involved with modeling and wall calligraphy. As an Asian American who has successfully entered the media space, he will be discussing how he became involved in the media, what racial barriers he faced in doing so, and what advice he has for other young aspiring Asian Americans interested in following a similar career. The event is FREE and dinner & drinks will be served. Donations will be accepted for our charity organization, the Asian Arts Initiative, which is based here in Philadelphia.
