What is Holi?
Holi festival commemorates the victory of good over evil, brought about by the burning and destruction of the Demoness named Holika. Holi got its name as the "Festival of Colors" from Lord Krishna, who liked to play pranks with His friends by drenching them in water and colors. This is a traditional festival of joy through which people are immersed in absolute bliss! The Festival of Holi is officially celebrated in spring, on the month of Falguna. The legend usually associated with Holi revolves around the wicked king Hiranyakasipu whose son Prahlada was a devotee of Lord Vishnu. When the king tried to prevent his son from worshipping Lord Vishnu, with the aid of his sister Holika, who had a boon that made her immune to the effects of fire, his plan backfired and Prahlada escaped unscathed while Holika was burnt to death. Weekly Sunday Pujas
12:00 pm - 1:15 pm
LOCATION: Graduate Student Center Basement between 36th and 37th and Locust
Each week, HSC/YJA organizes a traditional puja service for the UPenn community through the generosity of the OMkar foundation. This hour-long ceremony includes the performance of a Ganesh puja, the recitation of shanti mantras, meditation, bhajans and aarthi. Come join us for this great way to reflect, relax and recharge during the Spring semester.
