Based at Columbia University in the City of New York, The Journal of Global Health (JGH) is a student-run, international publication that seeks to highlight innovative solutions to global health problems. With authors and subscribers representing over 40 institutions in 10 countries spanning 5 continents, JGH is committed to featuring original student research in public health and spotlighting grassroots public health activism led by students.
In addition to the biannual Journal of Global Health print issue, the newest feature of JGH is the GlobalThink Forum. Featuring the work of students at over 25 institutions spanning 5 countries, GlobalThink (modeled after The New York Times' Room for Debate) calls on undergraduates to make short essay arguments to provocative global health questions. GlobalThink and our recently published Fall 2011 print issue can be found on JGH Online (www.ghjournal.org).
Submit to the Spring 2012 Issue of JGH: “Reconciling Modern and Traditional Medicine”
Modern drugs and medical knowledge are crucial to improving the health of populations worldwide, but traditional medicine remains the most affordable and accessible type of health care for millions of people in developing countries. Where does traditional medicine fit in with the movement to eliminate global health disparities?
The Spring 2012 issue of JGH will spotlight on the theme of “Reconciling Modern and Traditional Medicine.” We specifically encourage the submission of pieces that address global health issues in the context of traditional medicine practices. Some relevant topics include the relationship between traditional medicine and: primary or preventive care, drug discovery research, health infrastructure, drug regulation, health psychology, and biodiversity.
In addition, as with our Spring 2011 and Fall 2011 issues, we welcome the submission of all papers that address behavioral, biological, environmental, political, or socioeconomic factors that affect the health of populations and individuals.
Write about our next GlobalThink Forum question!
The 21st century has witnessed the development of remarkable renewable energy sources, providing a healthier and safer alternative to the burning of fossil fuels. However, we currently find ourselves in an energy crisis. In addition, proponents of nuclear energy have been faced with a major hurdle in the wake of the 2011 Fukushima Nuclear Crisis. In spring 2011, Germany decided to shut down all of its nuclear plants in the next two decades. Especially since solar, geothermal, wind, and water energies may not be sufficient to satisfy the developing world’s appetite for energy, where do we get energy?
Until 11:59PM on January 25, 2012, we will be accepting GlobalThink submissions AND submissions for our Spring 2012 issue:
· Original Academic Research Papers – Research-based works addressing a specific area of global health
· Perspectives – Opinion pieces that address fresh and exciting developments in global health
· Field Notes – Written with a more personal voice, pieces that are based on your direct involvement in the field
Information on submissions can be found at www.ghjournal.org. Questions? Please email submi...@ghjournal.org.
