Hi Friends:

So, I'd love to try to get organized for next semester, especially since we have Palestine Awareness Week coming up. I would propose a retreat, but I'm not sure with you who live outside the states what your location will be over break. So:

We need to choose positions for next year. I am thinking we will have Jamal back. Please throw in suggestions of others who you think would come out to our meetings. I know Penn Against War is still around, but not as active as last year, so I see us as being in a really strategic position to be speaking powerfully & truthfully to the political situation in the Middle East, esp. obviously for Palestine. (If not now, when? If not  us, who?)

Temple SJP (TUSJP) is organized! And now that we have them in our circle, lets work together. I sent an email to Jacob, thanking him and TUSJP for their wonderful week and suggesting we work together to put our "Palestine Awareness Week" and their "Resisting Israeli Apartheid" into one amazing week for awareness. I've been throwing around an idea with one of my friends Rob about putting together a forum on the roots of war  examining multiple oppressions & Liberation Movements etc. through partnering with other on-campus groups like the Excelano Project, Penn ACLU, Jewish Voices for Peace, Penn Against War, Physicians for Human Rights, Black Students Alliance, Penn Muslims for Change, PASS, Students for Democratic Society. . .

I'd love to organize Palestinian Awareness Week in the vein of complementary movements for social change by working hard to highlight the Palestinian struggle while contextualizing that struggle within other struggles (Hip Hop for Palestine does this beautifully). I'd like to do this both to have a large constituency of folk coming out to our events, but also to posit the reality that we all need each other & so that people understand that a struggle against Israeli apartheid IS a struggle against sweat-shops is a struggle against incarceration of our youth is a struggle against capitalism is a struggle against homophobia, plus we will be reaching out to a base that is already organized (that means a lot less work for us!) I know PennSJP isn't strong enough organizationally to pull something like that off on our own, but together with TUSJP and SUSTAIN (esp. since they offered us $$$$) we could put together something pretty and fantastic, without breaking the bank!

Initial Ideas:

1) Contact folk you think would be interested in joining SJP
2) Start brainstorming ideas for Pal. Aware Wk, and if you have someone you'd like to contact, just go ahead and do it so that when we come back from break we have something to build from.
3) Call a meeting to decide on officers.**
4) Look at your schedules to see if there is a time we could schedule our meetings M-F

**
Positions:

1) Publicity & Secretarial Coordinator (PASC): Takes notes at meetings, maintains & manages the listserv, emails event announcements, in charge of all paper and communication materials needed persuant to events like making fliers, copies etc. (or at least designates these tasks), maintains PennSJP facebook group.

2) Financial Coordination Organizer (CFO): Keeps track of SJP funds, thinks of brilliant fundraising ideas, pays speakers and/or anyone else seeking compensation. Deals with money related matters pertaining to groups, departments, or organizations who are co-sponsoring our events like MEC or NELC.

3) Community Liason & Details Organizer (CLADO): Works with other like-minded groups interested in supporting Penn SJP, like JVP, TUSJP, SUSTAIN, Moveon etc., coordinates meetings with these groups, attend events of like-minded groups in Philly, and reaches out to new constituencies. Also will be in charge of securing rooms, refreshments and whatever else for events which may include housing/hospitality for guest speakers. Is the face of PennSJP to other groups and speakers. GROUPS: TUSJP, SUSTAIN, PASS, JVP, Penn Muslims for Change, Students for a Democratic Society (SDS), Spiral Q Puppet Theatre, Penn Against War, The Excelano Project, Black Student Alliance, UMSC, International Socialist Org., Penn Persian Society, Tangible Change, UA, Hillel, Christian Association, Civil House, World Can't Wait, Brandywine Peace, A Space, etc, sympathetic mosques, churches and temples.

4) Penn SJP Group Facilitator (GFac): Is the coordinator of the group - has her/his finger on what needs to be done, whose done what & who still needs to do what, will be the default facilitator of SJP events if speakers or movies or what have you need to be introduced, will speak to media persons (or designate someone), will facilitate meetings (or designate someone), will be the fall-back person if someone is not able to fulfil their responsibilities (so if someone can't make brownies for the event because of X reason, will call the group facilitator whose job it will be to find someone to fill in.) Will represent PennSJP on Penn's campus.

Hi,

I am asking for your support.  The Iraq Veterans Against the War is streaming testimony from US veterans on Penn campus.  We need a student group to support us. Can you do this?

Here is the program for March 13th and 14 (hopefully in Stiteler B21).

Thursday, March 13 Streaming video only
7:00PM-9:00PM Winter Soldier and the legacy of GI Resistance

Friday, March 14 Satellite TV, internet video, internet audio, radio
9:00AM – 10:45AM Rules of Engagement: Part One
11:00AM – 12:30PM The Crisis in Veterans' Heathcare
2:00PM - 3:30PM Corporate Pillaging and Military Contractors
4:00PM - 6:00PM Rules of Engagement: Part Two

And tenatively:
7:00PM - 8:30PM Aims of the Global War on Terror: the Political, Legal, and Economic Context of Iraq and Afghanistan

Penn Faculty and Staff Against the War in Iraq doesn't have the staff to do Saturday and Sunday, so feel free to step up.  We also might restream this after spring break.

More information:
  • Winter Soldier: Iraq and Afghanistan will feature testimony from U.S. veterans who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, who will tell the hard truth about what is really happening, day in and day out, in Iraq and Afghanistan.
  • The four-day event will bring together veterans from across the country to testify about their experiences in Iraq and Afghanistan - and present video and photographic evidence.
  • In addition, there will be panels of scholars, veterans, journalists, and other specialists to give context to the testimony. These panels will cover everything from the history of the GI resistance movement to the fight for veterans' health benefits and support.
  • IVAW is working to make sure GIs and members of the public can view the testimony from anywhere in the world thru the web, check out IVAW.org for more information (updated regularly).
  • In the past year IVAW has grown from 10 to 40 chapters, and now has close to 750 members, veterans.

Please drop me a line if you are interested in helping,

Sharon
