The Politics and Stakes of Alternative Journalism
 Nov 29 * 1 to 5 p.m.
Annenberg School for Communication, room 500
3620 Walnut Street * Philadelphia PA 19104

What does it mean to talk about "alternative journalism"?  Is there a field that can be defined as such, or is it a style of news production?  Does it represent particular forms of organizing and production practices or an oppositional stance to so-called mainstream journalism?  What are the points of convergence and difference between alternative journalism and social movements? What does alternative journalism contribute to notions of public discourse, and how is it different from 'citizen journalism'?  How does new media technology change alternative journalism?

Join us for a half-day workshop on the politics and stakes of alternative journalism. Taking place in conjunction with the Annenberg School's conference on the Changing Faces of Journalism, this participatory event brings together researchers and practitioners of alternative journalism to wrestle with contested understandings and concepts of this vibrant area of media production.

Featuring:
* David Love (Black Commentator.com; Media Tank): "Alternatives to the Irresponsible Press: The role of narrative in social movement journalism"
* Mary Bock (Annenberg School for Communication): "Journalism: Fresh discourse or a cheaper version of yesterday’s news?"
* Bill Herman (Annenberg School for Communication): "Policy issues for alternative journalism: What are our legal rights and responsibilities?"
* Gretjen Clausing (Scribe Video Center): "Philadelphia’s Community Media Landscape"
* Todd Wolfson (Media Mobilizing Project): "Embedded Journalism and the Future of Grassroots Movement"

Chaired by Elizabeth Bird (University of South Florida) and Peter Dahlgren (Lund University)
