Your CPU can run both versions. Which version you install is more or less up to you, however, if your machine has at least 4GB of RAM, I would recommend installing the amd64 version. Some more insight into the differences between 32 and 64bit architectures can be found here. As for stability and availability, it seems you've already covered this in another question, so I won't go deeper. ;-)

If you're in no hurry, you can wait about a month, then the next version (11.04 - Natty Narwhal) will be released, with significant changes to the default user interface. If you're a beginner you will save yourself some re-learning.

Yes i7 works fine with both architectures, but no particulares evidences about performance. Usually a reason of this choice it's due about how much ram u have installed on board. If u need to map over 4gb 64bit works better, this one of main difference...

If your processor is 64 bit use that one.If you have an older machine that is 32bit use that one.The 32 bit version will run on a 64 bit processor but not vice versa. The 32 bit version will only support 2G memory. If you have more than2G you probably have a 64bit processor.

Aside from the obvious solution of "just install the respective package(s) with your 64-bit Python version", and aside from justifying valid use cases, I am after some technical insight into this scenario.

Rico Mariani, dev boss for VS2010 has blogged about the reasoning behind not creating a 64-bit version (yet). Not an official opinion of course, just a some insight from somebody that was very closely involved. He left the team btw.

I opened a ticket with HCL support and the reason for the change is that the vendor(Notepad++, Mozilla, Zoom) do not support 32bit applications running on 64bit OS. So HCL support said they are following the vendors guidelines.

Maybe the right option here is to open an Ideas suggest and let other Bigfix customers upvote it so HCL can gain a better insight as to the impact this change is having on their customers. It looks like it was a change in Aug where they added the OS check to the fixlet for 8.5.5 where as previous fixlets only checked the raw version of Notepad++.

It occurred to me that I accidentally installed the 32-bit version of LibreOffice without realizing it. When I look at the download page, the 64-bit version is selected by default. Even though it is unlikely, I still want to check if I have the 32-bit version installed.

Thank you, Mike, for answering so completely. I now see that I mistakenly installed the 32-bit version. I should have thought to check where it was installed and the process used before writing for help.

Thanks for the insight, Mike. It is good to know that submitting an issue can be that easy.
Since a developer will read these comments, one more point: Labeling the x64 version x86_64 in the dropdown menu is confusing. I would not know that it is the x64 version unless someone mentioned that here.

x86-64 (also known as x64, x86_64, AMD64, and Intel 64)[note 1] is a 64-bit version of the x86 instruction set, first released in 1999. It introduced two new modes of operation, 64-bit mode and compatibility mode, along with a new 4-level paging mode. With 64-bit mode and the new paging mode, it supports vastly larger amounts of virtual memory and physical memory than was possible on its 32-bit predecessors, allowing programs to store larger amounts of data in memory. x86-64 also expands gener...

I was fooling with insight today on my new distro, I installed as I said above with no problems, but it turns out nasm has to also be the version that was released with Karmic Koala, or else insight will not stop at breakpoints.

I used the input from RTW above on 10.04 and 11.04
and all went well. Thanks a ton guys for the info.
I hope i will like nasm as well as i liked tasm and its
debugger back in 92 on dos.

When i try to install insight using the above commands it says:
Package insight is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source
However the following packages replace it:
gdb-doc

An update. I successfully installed insight 6.7.1 on Ubuntu 14.04 using the .bz/configure/make method Jey suggested. I note that 6.8.1 did not install using the same commands. See link below from insight author regarding 6.8.1.

I wanted to add more information for Mint users. Kate is a KDE application, so Mint (running Gnome or Cinnamon) will have issues. I had to do the following to get the editor working properly:
1. As per , install the following KDE libraries:
apt install kdelibs-bin kdelibs5-data kdelibs5-plugins
2. To enable the pretty icons and make the interface more usable, install the oxygen-icon-theme from the Software Manager.
3. In Kate, you may have to manually enable some of the plugins. Go to Settings -> Configure Kate -> Plugins and enable terminal tool view, File system browser, and any others you might want.
4. At first, clicking the Terminal button just opened a grey empty background. I had to install the KDE konsole app to get it working. sudo apt-get install konsole
Hope that helps.

My apologies for the poor formatting.

An added benefit of this approach is that all command line commands should work as printed in the book. (When working from my 64-bit Linux Mint machine, I did have to change an ld command slightly from Chapter 5 to get it to work properly, but did not have to when I fired up my 32-bit Ubuntu 9.10 VM.)

Hi,
there is build of insight from Patrick Monnerat, at
, I made a successful setup both on Ubuntu 15.10 and 16.04 LTS released yesterday, recording all steps and dependencies, I am making some check, because I made a 64 bit Ubuntu and I see some different behavior probably related to the 64 bit architecture.
So as I am sure of the right build options, I will publish the setup guide.

Thanks.
The Monnerat version I used to get insight working is, as can be checked on the fedora website, the version used in that distribution to make a native package.
So it confirms the valid starting point, what could be interesting, could be to try to make a deb packages, based on the dependencies I found and put it on launchpad. This is also a commond practice for many tools, my direct experience in with Wireshark network analyzer.
Currently Ubuntu 16.04 LTS includes the lates 2.0.2 qt version, but for up 15.10, where was not updated regularly, as it will happens later for this Ubuntu, there are builds for 2.0.x where the repositories include onlly that latest 1.x

Thanks, Jeff! I think something was corrupted with the motherboard, because originally i thought the problem came from hard drive but after waiting for 3 days for my new hard drive to arrive, the problem persisted. ive given up on this 32bit computer, and going back to my 64bit intel core 2 duo instead. although a few tweaks here and there are needed to get all the required tools (such as Kate, Insight etc) to work, but at least it works. Nevertheless, I still think your style of teaching asm in 32bit is great. I know some people think you should keep up to date with the tools utilized; but computer technology evolve fast and furious. every front end will be deemed outdated 10 or 20 years from now. people should pay attention to the underlying theory, the fundamental principles behind computer architecture, and thats the gist of learning assembly language.
I wish i was more experienced with computers, (this is pretty much my first course in CS) and if given a choice, i would stick with my 32bit.
on another note, i enjoy reading your first few chapters on computer fundamentals a lot. I wish I knew as much as you did about computer architecture etc.
Would you recommend some other readings (besides the ones you mentioned in the book) to read to learn computer fundamentals after I finish this book? Many thanks again!

At this moment, we only provide an installer for an older 32-bit Windows version of insight3d (version 0.3.2). This version is unlikely to work on datasets containing large numbers of images. This is due to the fact that for calibration, the application needs to store all detected features from all images at the same time in memory. One way to mitigate this is to use a lower resolution images for calibration (this is done by a single click in the calibration settings, you don't have to actually resize the photos). We are working hard towards a user-friendly release of a new version.

Disclaimer: This software is intended for educational purposes. Potential users in countries that allow software patents must first investigate whether or not this software package uses any algorithms patented in their respective countries and if so, refrain from using it.

But I need help: there are tons of different digital cameras and I've tested my app only on few of them. insight3d should be able to handle all typical cameras, but there's some stuff in the optimization routines that has yet to be tweaked appropriately. Probably. It would be great if you could send me datasets you tried to feed into insight3d. Both the ones that worked and the ones that didn't are imporant! If you want, download the app, read the tutorial (there's important info on what photos should be used and where to eventually send them!), take some photos, have fun with it and please send it to me. Hope that it'll work for you, but don't hold your breath.
