Subject: 6 months to go till Peace Day, 21 September
UN Special Envoy for the Great Lakes region of Africa, Said Djinnit, supporting Peace Day
Dear Rizali (Ippit),
There are 6 months to go until Peace Day 2015, and there’s so much to get excited about; I wanted to share a snapshot of what we’re planning at the moment.
Firstly, we’re really looking forward to the Countdown to Peace Day Forums we’re organising over the coming months in the Great Lakes region of Africa (GLR). Everything we’re doing is thanks to the remarkable support of the Howard G. Buffett Foundation, to which we are incredibly grateful.
We’re proud to announce that Said Djinnit, the Special Envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General for the Great Lakes region in Africa will open our event in Kigali, Rwanda, on 28 April. It is an honour to have Mr. Djinnit representing the United Nations, and he’ll be speaking alongside representatives of the Rwandan government, the British High Commission and numerous other key figures from the international community, the NGO sector and civil society more broadly.
Through these forums we hope to create a platform to encourage and inspire even greater participation and awareness for Peace Day across the region this year. Engaging with every sector of society is a key step towards the manifestation of a wide range of events and activities taking place on the day, culminating with our concert featuring Akon.
Along with Akon, so many inspiring supporters have come forward to lend their support to Peace Day in 2015 and I am excited to share with you a small selection below. I met with actor Bonnie Wright in New York, who offers a powerful rallying cry for young people the world over to get involved, while Kenyan national team captain and Southampton FC midfielder, Victor Wanyama calls on all football fans to take to the football pitch this Peace Day. It was great to reconnect with Jochen Zeitz who has been instrumental in supporting Peace Day over the years. Now as Director of Kering and Chairman of the Kering board's sustainable development committee, it is great to have his support for how Peace Day can support our goals for sustainability and peace around the world.

NGOs have been a pivotal part of making Peace Day a success and we are delighted to have the backing of the International Rescue Committee (IRC) after a great meeting I had last month with President and CEO David Miliband. The IRC are one of dozens of major NGOs taking part in our GLR forums, and one of thousands of NGOs that we’ll be working with globally this year.
All of this incredible support just goes to show how important Peace Day, 21 September is. We hope that hundreds more organisations and millions more individuals will join the ever-more powerful call to mark Peace Day as a day of hope and unity. And we know that it’s only through you and your work that this can happen. So please help make Peace Day 2015 a massive success and tell us what you’re planning to do by filling out our simple new plans form.
Let’s get planning for Peace Day!
In peace
Jeremy
