The Avenir Next font family was designed by Adrian Frutiger in collaboration with Monotype Type Director Akira Kobayashi. It was an expanded reworking of the original font family (released as an OpenType font with both oldstyle and lining figures) and received considerable acclaim upon its publication by Linotype in 2004.
Since its release, the Avenir Next design has been immensely popular for an extensive range of different applications. The font was instantly successful in print and with its expanded range of characters and specific optimization, equally successful as an on-screen font. -- fonts.com
In 2019 we reviewed the set of fonts provided with Office identifying stylistic gaps. The result of that effort was the addition of over a hundred new fonts, including classics like Avenir Next LT Pro and Walbaum along with contemporary designs like The Hand, Sagona and Modern Love. These new fonts are available in most Office applications and have been used in a range of new templates.
My ArcGIS Pro has a font called Avenir Next LT Pro, but I cannot find it when I go to C:\Windows\Fonts. Strangely, I can see this font in Words but not in Illustrator which is my biggest concern. Is there a reason that this font is playing hide and seek with me?

I know this topic has previously been discussed here and 'artifacts' was mentioned. But to me, it doesn't make sense that the issue goes away when the font is used in a different application. Or the file that contains that font is opened up in a different application.
Your case invites easily one to search downloadables from grey font sites, who have thousands free fonts and in addition they have at least as many high cost commercial fonts freely downloadable. They have a disclaimer, for ex. this font is not ours, you must pay to the copyright owner what he wants, if you are going to use this.
NOTE: Using commercial fonts without paying is illegal, in some countries even having them is illegal. And you can get anything harmful that malware developers have ever invented. Check, if you can get legal trial versions from established commercial font distributors.
This font issue seems to be originating in Adobe programs on Windows 10. I was given a file from a Mac version of Adobe Illustrator. I have worked between Windows and Mac and back again on a weekly basis at my previous job and font recognition has not been an issue.
The file that was given to me was a packaged file with a "Fonts" folder containing multiple .ttf and .otf fonts which I installed on my Windows 10 PC. The Avenir Next font family was packaged in a .ttc file which I have never seen before.
But when I go into the AI file I was given, all of the font family shows up except for Avenir Next Bold, which it shows as missing. This is true in every Adobe program I have tried ie. Photoshop, and InDesign so far.
Thx @Ton Frederiks , I wish I found this answer a lot sooner. This also worked for me and its great to know that is how I can get Illustrator to find a font. Does this also work for other Adobe products?
Yes you need to unzip the files and upload those files in your fonts folder within your WP installation folder. The best location you can place it is in the root directory by creating a fonts folder. Having this way, you can easily access it using the step 3 which would mean that you add a custom css code in your customizer, Appearance > Customize > Custom > CSS
We've recently changed our company font to Avenir Next Lt Pro, which is part of Microsoft Cloud fonts, but I am having a lot of issues when we open files with the font saying it is missing when the file is reopened (in either desktop or online), but it isn't and it defaults to another font. Happens on both my machine and others.
Our design team has been having many font issues after upgrading to Catalina. Last month wingdings2 stopped working in our indesign documents, and after the most recent update to Catalina, we started having issues with the Avenir next family (ttc) system font not working anymore in existing indesign documents. We've been using those fonts without issue for years. I have a 200-page book that needs to go to the printer tomorrow and all the Avenir next medium just looks like crazy nonsense. We tried updating Suitcase Fusion, clearing all font caches etc. and can't make it work. In some places where variations of avenir did load and preview, the size and leading were all messed up. Sometimes when you open the file preflight shows 1812 type errors. The next time you open the file, it shows No errors but all the type is just random glyphs. THIS IS A HUGE ISSUE!
Are the layouts picking the fonts from an InDesign package or directly from the system fonts folders? If you don't mind you can share some pages of your book (just a paragraph or so) to check the font behavior on my side.
In the meantime I share a ZIP archive containing two InDesign layouts using Avenir Next Medium and Wingdings 2 fonts: one made on Yosemite and one on Catalina. Each layout has its PDF to check the fonts.
Clearly, something is seriously wrong on your Macs. I have Catalina installed on 2018 Mini and have no issues of any kind with fonts, InDesign, Quark XPress or any of the usual array of apps used in prepress.
I wouldn't pay a nickel for Suitcase Fusion. Extensis has ruined that app. It's incredibly slow now, and actually unstable if you give it too many fonts to handle. And it sure isn't worth $84 a year as a subscription app. We're talking about a font manager here, not Photoshop.
Fonts can't just "stop working". Either the OS upgrade is damaged, or, as often happens (we see it a lot on these forums), fonts go wacky because underlying Font Book databases and caches get damaged during the upgrade process. You should also never have more than one font manager on your Mac at a time. Just launching Font Book causes it to create hidden system files and .plist files in the user account. These, in part, keep track of what fonts are active. Then, even if you aren't using Font Book, it will fight to keep any fonts open or disabled it thinks should be no matter what you're doing with another font manager.
The file com.apple.FontBook.plist keeps track of Font Book's general preferences and activated fonts, whether as a standard or library collection. com.apple.FontRegistry.user.plist keeps track of deactivated fonts. Both may not be present. Delete what's there.

The word avenir is French for "future". As the name suggests, the family takes inspiration from the geometric style of sans-serif typeface developed in the 1920s that took the circle as a basis, such as Erbar and Futura. Frutiger intended Avenir to be a more organic interpretation of the geometric style, more even in colour and suitable for extended text, with details recalling more traditional typefaces such as the two-storey 'a' and 't' with a curl at the bottom, and letters such as the 'o' that are not exact, perfect circles but optically corrected.[1]
The initial release of the typeface family was increased to 24 fonts: six weights, each with a roman and italic version, in two widths (normal and condensed). Frutiger's numbering system was abandoned in favor of more conventional weight names. The glyph set was expanded to include small caps, text figures, subscript and superscripts, and ligatures.
Two extra font weights (light and thin) were added to the font for the release of Avenir Next W1G, for a total of 32 fonts. This release also added Greek and Cyrillic glyphs in the regular width only.
