Hi all,
Given that already 200 people have applied for the PhD position in
Stockholm, there is apparently no shortage of applicants, and many of
you obviously noted the ad already. But if not, and if you are interested
or know people interested in this, there is still time until Monday night.
You'd need to apply through the electronic system on:

https://su.varbi.com/en/what:job/jobID:900572/

This site was also mentioned on the AAS job register:

https://aas.org/jobregister/ad/8c3b75b9

For further details regarding the COSMOMAG position, see also an earlie

The core of the work is focussed on a more precise understanding of the
generation of magnetic fields in the early Universe, their turbulent
evolution into and out of the radiative era through the epochs of
recombination until today, where gamma-ray and radio observations provide
ever more detailed constraints.

The project does rely on numerical simulations. Analytic work is also
important, especially when interpreting the results. To verify specific
models, one needs to understand what the basic assumptions are based
on and how safe are they. One needs to develop new ideas if the present
results don't seem to match with the conventional understanding.

To use supercomputers and to run and test numerical simulations, one needs
to work in a linux environment. Therefore, some familiarity with linux
will be unavoidable. One can maybe also say that "common sense" is more
important than bare knowledge. We'll mostly work wit the Pencil Code; see

https://github.com/pencil-code/pencil-code/graphs/contributors

As you see, there are lots of people contributing all the time. Most of
the changes are "incremental", but occasionally new modules are being
added. This all depends on the scientific demands that emerge.

The PhD also requires course work in the beginning. In that sense,
familiarity with astronomy will also be important. So one needs to set
some time aside for that to be able to manage. The actual PhD work, on
the other hand, is all about writing and publishing papers. The final
PhD thesis consists of a detailed introduction to the specific subject
of the thesis and the papers that are attached to the thesis.
Cheers, Axel
