Robert Ordoez, a life-long resident of San Diego, North County, passed away peacefully on April 18th, 2024, in the company of his family and close friends. A dedicated son, brother, uncle, and good friend, he was preceded in death by his parents, Ernesto and Rose, and sister Martha.
Robert was a North County guy through and through. Born in Oceanside, he was raised in Vista, lived in Oceanside for years, and eventually re-settled in Vista. He was a thoughtful son, taking care of his mother in her final years until her passing in 2023. An unwavering friend throughout his life, he remained close with many of his childhood friends for Olive Elementary.
Roberts was an exceptional skilled worker for the Laborers Union, Local 89 for 30 years. He contributed to countless major projects in San Diego, and became a specialist at water treatment construction. He was well respected by his coworkers and supervisors.
As an avid outdoorsman and nature lover, Robert spent much of his spare time fishing and camping. He loved both freshwater and saltwater fishing, passing on this knowledge to his nieces and nephews and Robert helped many catch their first fish. As a youth, Robert played Little League and Pony League baseball in Vista, and remained a fan of the sport throughout his life. As a young adult, he enjoyed many snowboarding trips to Mammoth, Tahoe and Big Bear. He was a dedicated Miami Dolphins fan and rarely missed a game broadcast.
Barbara Marie Devan Born on Christmas Eve 1939 in San Diego, California to William and Marion Weathers. She was her parents only child and considered by them a blessing from God with her curly blonde hair and crystal blue eyes.
Barbara was raised in the Catholic faith and attended school at Our Lady Of Peace through her sophomore year at Rosary High before transferring to Hoover High School Class of 1957. In her youth she enjoyed bowling, music, dancing and the beach.
After graduating she attended San Diego Junior College studying accounting and finance. It was at this time while attending SDJC, Barbara started her first job in the banking industry at U.S. National Bank where she met the love of her life and future husband, William Thomas Devan.
Marrying Bill, she immediately gained a family and raised three young boys, Robert, Gary and Steven as her own. Growing up as an only child Barbara dreamed of having a large family and together with Bill they added six more children Mark, Donald, David, Sharon, Christine and Christopher. She was very proud of all her children.
In 1976 Barbara and her family moved to Vista California when her husband started Vista National Bank. This is where she reentered the banking industry working for Great Western Savings & Loan, Allstate Savings & Loan and CitiBank. She enjoyed her work, her customers and keeping current on what was happening around the community. Everyone loved seeing Barbara at the bank. It was always more then just a transaction when she was assisting you.
Fernando Jimenez age 64, passed away on February 16th, 2024. He was born on June 24th 1959 in Mexicali, Mexico to Simon and Antonia Jimenez.
Fernando grew up in Vista, CA. He attended Crestview Elementary and Graduated from Vista High School. He took pride in being from the City of Vista. He was known for being a fan of the Los Angeles Dodgers, LA Lakers and the Los Angeles Rams. He also had a love for music and cars and loved spending time with his family on the weekends. Fernando was known for being a hard-worker and being very dedicated to his family. He worked for Diamond Environmental Services as a commercial driver.
He is survived by his loving wife of 40 years Cruz Jimenez. He will be missed dearly by his children Fernando Jimenez Jr. and Cristina Meza and by his siblings, brothers Arcadio Jimenez, and Gabriel Jimenez and sisters Elva Diaz, Maria Merlin, Eloisa Martinez and Rachel Jimenez. His memory will be cherished by his grandchildren Robert Jimenez, Isaac Jimenez, Sofia Meza, Cruz Meza and Daniela Meza. and many nephews and nieces.
Fernando was laid to rest on March 20th, 2024 at Eternal Hills in Oceanside, CA. and is predeceased by parents Simon and Antonia Jimenez.
Ruth Marie Thomas, long-time Vista resident, passed away on March 10, 2024. She was 101 years old. She is survived by her son Steven, grandchildren Jane Thomas-Tran, William Thomas, Spencer Thomas, Jesse Thomas, Heather Farrell, and Cassandra Boorom. Sullivan Farrell is her only great-grandchild. Marie was an avid seamstress, potter, photographer, gardener, and 5-gallon blood donor.
Robert Virgil Dowell, 100, died at his home in Vista on December 28, 2023. He was born in Muskogee, Oklahoma, on September 5, 1923 and had celebrated his 100th birthday at a neighborhood party on Labor Day weekend.
He joined the U. S. Navy in July, 1941 and served in both World War II and the Korean War. He received an electrical engineering degree from Texas Tech University in 1953 and was an employee of General Electric for 33 years, including the aerospace division.
Viewing will take place at the Allen Brothers Mortuary in Vista from 1-3pm Monday, January 8, followed by a funeral service at 3. Burial with military honors will be at the Masonic Cemetery in Fallbrook on Wednesday, January 10 at 11am.
Born on January 31, 1924 in Albuquerque, New Mexico to Eusabio Serna & Amalia Montoya. Lillie married Epifanio Tapia in 1942 and resided in NM where they had eight children. In 1956, they relocated to Vista California where they had two more children, for a total of 5 boys and 5 girls.
John is survived by his daughters, Jody Daffern of Quincy, Illinois and Theresa Gillespie (Bryan) of Garden Ridge, Texas; grandchildren, Rick Daffern, Bryan Boden, Bryon Garza, Brooke Gillespie, Matthew Schroder, Brooke Blume; great-grandchildren, Kendrick Garza, Jazmen Boden, Abigail Daffern; siblings, Wanda Webster, Jerry Schroder, Jan Schroder, Joan Dennison, Jay Schroder; numerous nieces, nephews and other loving relatives. He preceded in death by his loving wife of 53 years, Ruby Schroder; son, Chrales Schroder; parents, John Henry Schroder and Lilly Mae Kling Schroder; siblings, Roy Schroder and Jean Crest. Memorial services will be held for John at a later date.
Merry Ann Nickerson, 80, a longtime resident of Vista, CA , died on August 11th in Calabasas, CA due to complications of Alzheimers and Dementia. She was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee on December 4, 1942, to Louis and Calva Swanson.
During her childhood years, the Swanson family moved frequently, living in Florida, Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Oregon, and California. Merry attended six different high schools in six different states, ultimately graduating from Huntington Park High School in California.
In her later years, Merry spent much of her time traveling, volunteering, gardening and being involved with her church and book club. However, her family always came first, and she devoted much of her time to her four grandchildren.
Jill was born in Northern California but was raised in Vista. She was a proud Vista High School Class of 1979 alumni. Jill was active in ASB at VHS and served as Commissioner of Elections her senior year.
Her interest in politics only deepened over the years. Jill served in roles ranging from events director to field organizer to door knocker for Democratic congressional, governor and local candidates in Utah, Pennsylvania and Virginia. More recently, she worked as a legal secretary
for the political-law firm Perkins Coie in Washington.
Jill is survived by her former husband, Charlie Fromm of Medford, OR, and their sons John Fromm of Fairfax, VA, and Will Fromm of Medford. She is also survived by her sisters, Marjie Riveroll Kennington and Kathie Kenner, both of Las Vegas; many dear cousins, nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles. Her parents, Eddi Smith and John Riveroll, preceded her in death as did her beloved grandmother, Elinor Riveroll.
Lynne Hazel Bullock was born to Percy Preston Bullock and Frances Marion Clugage on May 18, 1943 in Alameda, California. Lynne passed away peacefully May 6th, 2023 of natural causes with her daughter present and surrounded by the love of her family.
Lynne was a 1960 Alhambra High graduate, completing in three years. Lynne then combined work and college, ultimately attaining a bachelor of science degree from Cal State LA with a fifth-year teaching credential.
Lynne taught middle school in the Bonsall School District, spending many years as the art teacher and also teaching language arts and history. Lynne began teaching middle school when Bonsall had but one campus. When she retired, Bonsall had expanded to several campuses throughout the district.
Lynne was a culture vulture and enjoyed all the arts, especially theater, dance, and paintings. She enjoyed gardening, especially proud of her night blooming cereus. Lynne developed her family genealogy back to the revolutionary war. She was also an avid reader and a life long student of history especially the Scythians and the arts. Lynne was a proud MENSAN and greatly enjoyed those activities. Lynne loved animals and had dogs and cats all her life.
On August 24, 1968, Tom married June L. (Dover) Wilson, and their two families combined to make him the father of five girls. That same year, he started his career at the Vista (California) Irrigation District, where he worked for 26 years, retiring in 1994 as General Manager and Chief Engineer. From there, the couple moved to Florida and became the youngest couple in their retirement community, with June barely qualifying for the 55 year age minimum.
Tom inherited his spiritual disposition from his parents: his faith was expressed through quiet service to others and an abiding generosity offered with no strings attached. He graced the pews of First Presbyterian Church in Lake Alfred, Florida, throughout his retirement and served as an usher and bookkeeper. He also spent his 28-year retirement helping others achieve the goal of owning a home by volunteering at the East Polk County Habitat for Humanity, where he built homes until he could no
longer safely climb a ladder; and then acted as chapter treasurer until this year. He was active in the Kiwanis Club and the American Legion in both California and Florida.
