JPSchools students in grades 9-12 will operate on the Smart Start schedule for the first week of school. Students in grades pre-K to 8 are not impacted and will operate on their normal schedule. In schools that serve high school as well as middle or elementary grades, only students in grades 9-12 will participate in the Smart Start schedule.

JP Schools based this change on feedback from conversations with groups of students, families, teachers, counselors, and administrators. School leaders will determine the details of their Smart Start schedules based on the unique needs of their school community. Smart Start gives educators an opportunity for more individualized discussions about a number of school policies, benefits, and supports such as:

Students in grades 9-12 will only attend school on their designated days August 8-11. All high school students will attend starting August 12. Teachers will attend school each day. High school students will still exceed the number of instructional minutes required by the state due to additional minutes being built into the academic calendar. While Smart Start will only take place the first week of school, school leaders are committed to adjusting schedules throughout the year to assist students.

There are a number of schools in JP Schools that serve high school grades, as well as elementary or middle grades. Students in grades 9-12 at these schools will operate on the Smart Start schedule for the first week of school. Students at these schools who are not in high school grades will operate using the regular academic calendar. The first day of classes for students in grades 1-8 is August 7. Students in pre-K and kindergarten start August 10-11.

Yes. All teachers return for the 2023-24 school year on August 1 to begin preparation and participate in professional development. Because high school classes generally include students from various grade levels, educators will have the opportunity to engage with students in smaller groups and one-on-one sessions. Teachers and staff will also participate in informational sessions, activities, and other events planned during the Smart Start days.

What is the SmartStart Program?

Simply put, it's the best way for ASHRAE student members to receive the many benefits of Associate grade membership after finishing college. SmartStart is a 3-year program that allows Student members to transfer to Associate grade membership at a rate that is recent-graduate friendly.

When I was searching for a job, nearly all my interview calls were either from people I met through ASHRAE or from someone associated with an ASHRAE connection who passed along my resume. By that method alone, I averaged one or two interviews a week. I started my new engineering job on July 10, 2013, and I do not even have a LinkedIn account. - Justin Libay, Project Engineer, Willdan Energy Solutions, Pleasanton, California (ASHRAE San Jose Student Chapter President, 2012-2013)
