Hello everyone,

I have a question about the Pelagios Place Widget. I embedded it some
time ago on the Book of the Dead project website and now we noticed
that it stopped working. See for example
http://totenbuch.awk.nrw.de/objekt/tm134451 , where the widget icon is
supposed to appear after the value "Theben" behind the label
"Herkunft" (forth row from above).
To embed the widget, I followed the instructions at
http://pelagios.github.io/pelagios-widgets/docs/place.html and checked
that the JS is included at the end of the HTML body to avoid that it
does not find the HTML snippet.

The HTML snippet is created with this XQuery code:

if(exists($pleiadesid)) then <span id="TbPelagiosWidget"
data-pleiades_id="{data($pleiadesid)}" class="pelagios pelagios-place"
title="Pelagios Widget"></span> else()

In the Output HTML, the span is present, but the data-pleiades_id
attribute does not appear at all (in Firefox 30.0 and Chrome 36, as
well):

Theben
<span id="TbPelagiosWidget" class="pelagios pelagios-place"
xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml"></span>

I checked the variable $pleiadesid and it does contain the right
value. Is this a known problem? Could it be related to the JavaScript
somehow? Or to the XHTML namespace?

Best regards,
Ulrike

Hi Ulrike

Unfortunately it seems that the widget has run into problems which are
difficult to surmount :-(

Can I recommend use of the awld.js widget, developed by Nick
Rabinowitz and Sebastian Heath as an alternative? It works really well
and gives a link directly into the Pelagios API:

http://isaw.nyu.edu/members/sebastian.heath-40nyu.edu/awld-js

I think Nick and Sebastian are on the list, so they may wish to
comment further. If anyone else if using the Pelagios widget I would
suggest deactivating it for now.

All the best

Leif

Hi Leif,

thank you for your recommendation. Now we are using the awld.js
widget, which works really well indeed.

Cheers,
Ulrike

I know that we (Leif, Rainer and I) have sung the praises of the awld.js widget for awhile now. But is it "sold" anywhere on the Web? A brief look at our own website only provides a link to our (now discontinued) widget. Perhaps we could provide better information ourselves and note the awld.js widget as our preferred option right now?

(This is an internal question for us really, but, if anyone had any thoughts, we'd welcome comments.)

cheers, elton

Is the AWLD.js widget listed in the tools category of the Digital
Classicist wiki? I think it's significant and widely-used enough to
warrant a page of its own...

I don’t see it anywhere on the wiki. I guess ISAW should undertake to get it there?
