The one thing to remember is that you cannot add what EN considers to be a filter after you have added the search text using the search bar. You can only add them using the filter menu from the filter icon. This doesn't help for notebooks because that is the one filter that doesn't appear in the filter menu.
I search for stuff in specific notebooks all day long, and this change freaked me out. Seems there should be a better way to let people know how to search in a specific notebook. The new method works OK, but it's totally not intuitive that it now works this way. I had to come here to the forum to find the answer. So yay for the forum support, but I don't think I should have had to do that, for such an important function of Evernote.
I don't think it can be done. There is no filter for stacks or an ability to easily select the individual notebooks that make up the stack. You could use the search syntax to select all the different notebooks but that would be time consuming to say the least and would probably only be worth it as a one off activity to create a saved search. Happy to be proved wrong if anybody else knows of a way.
Like many Evernote 10 "improvements", making the ability to search within a notebook so hidden and difficult to find just totally sucks. Searching "search within notebook" in the main Evernote help provides nothing helpful in this regard. Had to do a Google search to find THIS note. Why can't search be a selectable option WITHIN the notebook?
To search inside of a notebook, it is simple and straightforward: When you already have selected a notebook and then click on the search button, the notebook is already preselected in the search mask. Just click it once to confirm the restriction, enter the search string, and it searches only in this notebook.

Searching in a notebook or a notebook stack is more intuitive in the legacy version which is just select a notebook or a stack and then search. No additional click to add filter in between the select and search.
After 2 years, the search within a notebook is still clunky: Yes, you can go to the notebook, search (mind you--in the legacy version, the notes matching your search term would automatically refresh as you typed), click enter (to actually perform the search; which you didn't need to do in the legacy version), and if you want to go back to the notebook you started from, click the "x" to cancel the search... and boom! You are no longer in the notebook you started. You are now looking at ALL your notes. Now you have to remember... "What notebook was I looking at?" Select it, and start the search all over again. The search behavior in Evernote 10 still sucks.
I can certainly see the logic of wanting to go back to the original notebook rather than all notes, although many users would probably want to go back to all notes. A workaround is to open search and replace the search phrase with * and then hit enter. When you open search, the insertion point is at the end of the search phrase so you can do shift+Home and then type *. A * by itself is obviously just searching for everything, so you get everything in the already selected notebook.
Hi, I have accidentally deleted the notebook which is very crucial to be, i thought i am deleting just a note inside it and i dint care to see the warning dialog box !! (my negligence) . I am a premium user , and please help me how can I revert back my mistake
You should probably contact support. Deleted notebooks are not in the trash bin and as the warning said, all notes within are permanently deleted, so I don't think there is a way for you to undelete via the app.
When you delete a notebook, all of the notes in it are moved to the 'Trash' notebook and the empty notebook is removed from your account. When notes are restored from the trash they are placed into your default notebook.
What I have tried so far in the windows app:
- Shift-> Click and it selects up to 50 notes. (not optimal but better than 1...)
- Right click and get a list of options but not print.
- I clicked on the 3 dots (...) but print is not available. (But it is if I only select 1 note.)
- After multi select, I looked in the pull down menus for print. (Did not find it)
Why can I not select a notebook and print it 1 note per page etc?
If you want to backup your account, try right-clicking a notebook name and you should get an option to download all the notes to an ENEX format file which can be re-imported to Evernote - and several other apps - should you have the need. It's not currently possible to print the whole notebook (AFAIK) but you could consider installing the Legacy app (on a desktop which still has that option)
The likelihood of Evernote being shut down to the extent that users lose access to their notes is pretty remote, and even if a shut-down happened it would be standard practice to either offer an escape route to another app or give some months' notice to allow users to save their data. I use an app to export my notebooks to ENEX on a daily basis which IMHO is sufficient to protect me against catastrophic system failure, network loss and the possible need to jump ship.
Found the solution myself. Turns out there is a "Set as default notebook" option in the menu, and the notebook that is currently set as the default is disabled from being deleted. So, select another notebook from your account and set it as the default. Now you are able to delete the previous notebook.
Some feedback for Evernote: if only there was some indication (either in the menu options, or somewhere in the Notebook list view, or anywhere else for that matter) which indicated that "This notebook is set as the default notebook" it would have really helped. Otherwise, the only way I could have found out that this feature even existed is by looking at other notebooks' menu options which does give me the "Set as default notebook" button, but this button does not even show on the notebook which is already set as default. Poor UX.
I just had the same issue and thankfully I found this post. This really should be addressed by Evernote. A simple message informing the user why they can't delete the notebook should be included. It's absolutely ridiculous that we should have to search on the Internet for something that could be addressed so easily programatically.
I have selected a new Notebook as the default (yes I triple checked that I have done so) but anything I email to Evernote or share to it on my iPhone goes straight into my old notebook which I still use. The new notebook is called .Inbox.
Ever since I started using Evernote for Mac years ago, my default Notebook has been "fotofah's notebook". I just discovered a few minutes ago that when I email new Notes to my Evernote, they haven't been going into that Notebook, but instead to "Apple mobile device tips" Notebook. I've Googled how to make sure what my default Notebook is (in v10.5.7 that I'm using), but those instructions don't work. I can't find how to confirm what my default Notebook is.
I've gone to the left column in Evernote for Mac, gone under Notebooks, selected my "fotofah's notebook", then in the middle column, there is a set of three dots ... I go to the drop-down menu, but there's no selection there for making it (again) my default Notebook.
I tried to email with prefix @ and the name of another Notebook then my default one. The note the appears in my Evernote account but in my default notebook and not in the one I wrote the name of after "@".
I've used the great feature for years in Evernote of being able to email into specific Notebooks using the @notebook name. In the past, until Evernote for Mac v10.x If I didn't put a specific Notebook at the end of the Subject line of my email, it would go, as it should, into my default Notebook. Now, that's not always happening. That's my problem (only since updating to v10).
To solve the standard notebook issue, probably change it once, create a small note for make it sync*, close the client, reopen ist, change it back to the notebook you want to assign, do another little note, and close the client again. Maybe it will stick then.
Could you please check if the auto filling is enabled on your Evernote app? This option may place the email in a notebook they're not checking, disabling it will add the forwarded emails to their default notebook. You can go to and please check if the auto filling is enabled.
However, I am still struggling with how best to organise things in Evernote. I frequently find myself wanting to have another tier of structure, below a notebook and above a note. I have searched through these forums, and see a lot of people saying that isn't necessary, because you can do it all with tags, but I haven't yet found anyone saying *how* to do that.
