Hi all, there is an interesting short video in NYTimes (business section) today on sugarcane crop in India (you need to sit through a brief ad first). India's monsoons were late this year, and this threatens the sugarcane (and many other) crops. As the narrator says, India was an exporter, but may have to import. The vid discusses the fact that India still has gov price controls for many of the crops, as well as a say in how much gets sold
- “We have been a self sufficient country, so far, because our
farmer has been looked after.” The vid does not seem to be making any point.
The recently reelected gov in India wants to open up for many more crops to international markets, though the vid says that no deregulation is in the offing.
