Hi all, we might want to edit this a bit further before sending it off — but I had fun making it.

Dear Mamie Rheingold,

I hope this message finds you well. I’m reaching out to share an exciting vision that could align with the work you’re doing at OpenAI, particularly around the potential for AI to transform peer learning.

In a recent conversation with Joe Corneli, we discussed how AI systems could be harnessed to support collaborative, community-driven learning in a way that goes beyond traditional teaching methods. This vision is rooted in the idea of peer learning, where learners not only receive guidance from AI but also interact with each other in dynamic, adaptive environments—fostering mutual growth and building knowledge collectively.

As someone deeply connected to Howard Rheingold’s work on Peeragogy and online communities, I see great potential for you, in applying AI to support and amplify the values of peer-to-peer collaboration. By utilizing AI to curate and organize existing open resources, we could create adaptive learning environments where AI helps guide interactions between peers, drawing on their strengths and encouraging knowledge sharing.

An exciting possibility lies in using AI to mine literature (such as academic papers, articles, or user-generated content) to form a knowledge graph—an evolving, real-time resource that peers could navigate together. This kind of system could foster real-time problem-solving and collaborative knowledge creation, helping learners of all levels support each other while also benefiting from AI’s guidance and structure.

There is, of course, a challenge in getting AI to effectively handle complex, context-dependent human interactions, but with continued innovation, I believe OpenAI’s tools could contribute significantly to building AI-supported peer learning environments that not only assist learners but also encourage collaboration and knowledge exchange.

I’m excited to see where OpenAI’s work takes us, especially as we explore these possibilities of using AI for community-driven education and peer learning. I’d love to hear your thoughts on this vision and discuss ways AI can be developed to encourage more collaborative, social, and human-centered learning.

Best regards,

Postscript: Possible Experiments with ChatGPT for Peer Learning

To help explore the potential of AI in peer learning, here are some experiments we could try using ChatGPT:

  1. Collaborative Problem-Solving:
Set up a peer learning group where each participant is guided by ChatGPT to solve a problem collaboratively. The AI could act as both a facilitator and a knowledge source, suggesting directions and providing hints while encouraging discussion between peers.

  2. Knowledge Graph Development:
Use ChatGPT to organize existing educational resources (like articles or papers) into a dynamic knowledge graph, with links between concepts that peers can explore together. This could be a model for how AI can organize and visualize collective learning.

  3. Discussion Facilitation:
Test ChatGPT as a moderator in a peer discussion forum. The AI could pose questions, suggest follow-up topics, and help keep discussions on track, guiding participants toward deepening their understanding.

  4. Peer Feedback and Reflection:
Have learners reflect on their learning process with ChatGPT’s assistance. The AI could help generate feedback based on the learner's reflections, as well as encourage the group to provide constructive feedback to each other.

  5. Role-based Peer Learning:
Experiment with different roles for participants in a peer learning group (e.g., explainer, questioner, challenger) and let ChatGPT suggest activities that are suited to those roles. The AI could help tailor each interaction to encourage diverse learning styles and perspectives.

  6. AI-assisted Group Projects:
Facilitate a group project where peers collaborate to create something together (e.g., a shared research document, presentation, etc.). ChatGPT could help brainstorm ideas, provide resources, and guide group members as they work together, ensuring that they stay aligned and engaged.

Agreed. Interesting use of Chat GPT.

I've been exploring a few ideas myself, though I'm not sure how/if they align, yet.

All in good time, M. :)

Hello all,

It has been a long time since I've been joining the peeragogy weekly meeting. But, this letter seems great highlighting the recent use of AI in life.

Dear Ms. Rheingold, Dear Joe,

First, thank you Joe  for your ongoing contributions to peer learning and knowledge co-creation. Your work continues to expand the possibilities of what collaborative education can be.

Lately, I’ve been reflecting on a question that sits at the intersection of Peeragogy and AI:

What if we designed an AI Peeragogical Agent that not only refines the Peeragogy Handbook but also learns and teaches Peeragogy… to another AI?

Would this be the next step in a truly self-sustaining, peer-driven learning ecosystem? Could AI not just support, but actually participate in peer learning, becoming both a co-learner and co-teacher in the process?

And if AI starts engaging in Peeragogy autonomously, what does that mean for us? Do we become facilitators, collaborators, or simply observers of this new form of distributed intelligence?

These are not just speculative ideas—they present real opportunities to explore. If this sparks curiosity, there’s already a place to start:

Looking forward to your thoughts and insights.
