Rowland/Sykes engagement

The engagement was announced 14 January, 2005, between Mr Toby Rowland,
son of the late Mr "Tiny" Rowland (whose birth name was Furhop)and Mrs
Josie Rowland, & Miss Victoria "Plum" Sykes, the writer (b. 4 Dec,
1969), twin daughter (with her sister Lucy now Mrs Euan Rellie) of Mark
Richard Sykes (b. 1937), scion of the Sykes Baronets, of Sledmere,
Yorkshire, and his second wife, Valerie.

Plum's paternal grandmother, Camilla Georgiana Sykes (nee Russell)
(1912-83), was a scion of the Dukes of Bedford; the bride's paternal
grandfather was the grandson of Christine Cavendish-Bentinck, a
descendant of the 3rd Duke of Portland.'

"Tiny" Rowland who died in July, 1998, from skin cancer, was the former
head of the British-based conglomerate, Lonhro plc, has died at the age
of eighty from skin cancer. Rowland, who fought a long take-over war
with Mohamed Fayed for control of Harrods, was once described by the
former British Prime Minister, Sir
Edward Heath, as 'the unacceptable face of capitalism.. "

Further information on Toby Rowland's parentage:-

His father was born Roland Walter Fuhrhop, 27 November, 1917, at Simla,
India, the third child and second son of a German trader who had been
detained in a British internment camp in Imperial India during World
War I.

Rowland was the surname he adopted in 1939. His mother was half
Brtitish and half Dutch. "Tiny" Rowland married Josie Taylor, daughter
of Lionel Taylor, an engineer.

His Times obituary states: "His destiny arrived in 1961 in the unlikely
shape of Angus Ogilvy, the future husband of Princess Alexandra, who
went to Salisbury in 1961 to revive a moribund company called
Lonrho...Rowland merged most of his private interests into the company
in return for a share of the equity..."

R.W. "Tiny" Rowland died in London, 24 July, 1998. He was 80.
