OXFORD - The Reverend Michael Hunt Murray, born April 21, 1922 in Cambridge, England, into an American family with British peerage as direct descendants of John Murray, Lord Dunmore, the last royal governor of the Colony of Virginia, has passed away at the age of 96 on January 11, 2019 in Easton, MD.
His forefathers had a legacy of achievements and influence, in the military, industry, medicine, political and artistic history from pre-revolutionary times to the United States we know today.
Rev. Murray's military service included: U.S. Naval Aviator, Pensacola 1942, Atlantic Theater 1943 and the Pacific Fleet 1944-1945.
Rev. Murray's experiences as a courageous Naval aviator in the Pacific during World War II guided him into the Priesthood in 1964, after years of studying art in Western Europe and returning to the United States.
He attended the Groton School in Massachusetts from 1934-1940, Harvard University receiving his B.A. in 1948, Johns Hopkins receiving his Master's in 1951, University of Paris in 1952, the Episcopal Theological School M. Div. in 1965 and the College of William and Mary in 1982.
Rev. Murray served as Rector of St. Michael and All Angels in Cuernavaca, Mexico, from 1969-1975 and Rector of Ware Episcopal Church, Gloucester, VA, from 1975-1983.
He was an accomplished writer, his works included: Chefs d'Oeuvres de L'Art Oriental, In Sight of Eden, The Thought of Teilhard de Chardin, and Chance or Providence.
He retired to Oxford and Easton and devoted himself to painting the many lovely places he had visited during his lifetime.
Rev. Murray resided in Londonderry and was a member of the Church of the Holy Trinity in Oxford.
He is survived by his son, Eric Dunmore Murray (Lynne); daughter-in-law, Elizabeth K. Murray (Colin); grandchildren: Margaret M. Vencius (John), Jennifer M. Funaro (Paul), Eric B. Murray; and three great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by loved ones: his wife, Eliane C. Murray; his son, Colin D.A. Murray; his sister, Julia Mackintosh (Robert); and his parents, Veronica and Cecil Murray.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday, February 2, 11 a.m. at The Church of the Holy Trinity in Oxford, MD.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his honor to The Church of the Holy Trinity, 502 South Morris St., Oxford, MD 21654.
