_. The 7th Earl Cowley (Peerage of the UK, cr 1857), died 17 June, 2016. He was 81.
Garret Graham Wellesley was born 30 July, 1934, a son of the 4th Earl Cowley (1890-1962), by his second wife Mrs Mary Elsie May Himes, of San Francisco, California, United States. The family descend from the Wellesley Earls of Mornington ~ as do the Dukes of Wellington.
He succeeded to the family honours following the sudden death of his nephew, the 6th Earl, who collapsed and died on the squash court, 13 Dec, 1975. The peerage was in fact in abeyance for several months until the birth of the 6th Earl's posthumous daughter, Lady Caroline Wellesley, who was born 11 May, 1976.
Lord Cowley was four times married. Firstly in 1960 (div 1966) to Elizabeth Suzanne Lennon, dau of Haynes Lennon, of South Carolina, USA; secondly, 1968 (div 1981) to Isabelle O'Bready, of Sherbrooke, Quebec; 3rdly, 1981 (deceased) to Paige Deming, dau of Joseph Grove Deming, of Reno, Nevada, USA; fourthly, in 2012, to Carola Marion, widow of Capt Robin Andrew Stormonth Darling, scion of that landed family, & daughter of Sir Robert Erskine-Hill, 2nd Baronet.
Earl Cowley is survived by his fourth countess, and by a son and daughter from his first marriage, and a daughter from the third marriage.
A Memorial Requiem Mass takes place at the Church of Our Most Holy Redeemer & St Thomas More, Cheyne Row, London SW3, on Thurs 7 July.
