I had been doing some other research on DPB Online, when I came across this information.  I can't recall seeing it here, but if my post is just a repetition, then I apologize.

In my personal files, the person that I had as the Viscount was the 3rd Viscount, Ashley Kevin Godfrey HUGGINS (b. 1949)  He was married twice, but childless, so the hp was his uncle, Hon. Martin James HUGGINS (b. 1928), who was the only person in remainder.

According to DPB Online, the 3rd Viscount died  in 1997, when his uncle succeeded him as the 4th Viscount.

The 4th Viscount died in 2013, making the viscountcy (cr. UK 1955) extinct since that year.

DPB Online does list a living older brother of the 3rd Viscount,  Hon. Michael Patrick John HUGGINS (b. 1946), but he was born before their parents' marriage, so was not eligible to inherit the title.

Thank you for spotting this and passing it on.

My understanding is certainly as was in your files.  I believe the family were based in South Africa/Zimbabwe (this was the 2nd Baron's base), so updates were always tricky to come by, even when undertaking primary research as I sometimes do.

Hi Henry.

Glad to be of help.

I checked your latest list of Heirless Titles, which had the same information as I did, so I didn't think it had been posted here, but you never know.

Hon. Michael is shown as living in Gauteng, South Africa, so you are right about that.

With the extinction of this title, there are now 109 extant viscountcies (or should I say, where the "primary" title is "Viscount.")

Any ideas of date of Death for the 3rd Viscount and the 4th and last Viscount ?

Martin James Huggins
DOB for the 4th Viscount - 13 Jan 1928.
The elder son of the 2nd Viscount was Michael Paul John Huggins, born 13 Oct 1946, dying in the 20th century (unknown date). Of course the 2nd Viscount had married 1 Jan 1949 to Patricia Marjorie Renwick Bower..

Hi maltagenealogy.

DPB Online only had the years of death for both of them.

However, I have found a date of death on ancestry for the 4th Viscount-- March 26, 2013.  The residence for him at the time  is shown as Bexhill-On-Sea, East Sussex, England.

With regards to Michael Huggins, DPB Online does not give a year of death for him, so it is possible that he is still alive.

Hope this helps.

Thank you Brooke, According to my edition of Burkes Peerage stating the elder brother of the 3rd Viscount had passed away. But uncertain.
Thank you for the date of death for the 4th Viscount. Will update.

You're very welcome.

Interesting.  I just checked the last print edition of Debrett's (published in 2018), and the Hon. Michael is  shown as living in that volume.

This family appears to be totally mysterious!

Richard R,
could you please check these deaths on the GRO index?
It's totally unexpecting to miss a peer's death for 27 years.

The 4th Viscount (Martin James Huggins b 1928) death on GRO reg Q1/2013 in East Sussex

The 3rd Viscount's 1997 death is not recorded, but wouldn't be if he died & was registered outside England & Wales. He's not on Ancestry either.

Richard, that confirms the information I found on ancestry for a DOD for the 4th Viscount.  The exact date there was shown as March 26th.

As for the 3rd Viscount,  my guess is that his death was likely somewhere in Africa, possibly South Africa.  In Henry's previous post, he said the 2nd Viscount was based in South Africa/Zimbabwe and DPB Online is showing Gauteng, South Africa as a place of residence for the 3rd Viscount's older brother.

If you or anyone else wants to do further digging into his DOD, that would be a good direction, or if all else fails, possibly contacting Debrett's itself.

Found this at thepeerage.com:

It lists his address, from BP 2003 (so evidently, they didn't know he had died in 1997 either), as Cecil Square, Harare, Zimbabwe.

Looking back, it seems  everyone missed this post on peeragenews. blogspot .com , way back on December 31, 2013:

No listing of DOD for either the 3rd or 4th Viscounts.

Apparently even the Parliament was unaware of the death of the 3rd Viscount, as he is still listed as alive and was excluded from the House of Lords on 11 November 1999 ... which according to above posts was two years after his death.

The 3rd Viscount never received a writ of summons, let alone took his seat in the House of Lords, so it is unsurprising that the House of Lords authorities knew no more than the rest of us.

This is reminiscent of the late Marquess of Winchester who also died in southern Africa. It was a number of years before his demise was generally known
