Just an update on this family, having been looking into the Plumptons following a reread of Adam Nicolson's 'Gentry':
Robert Thomas de Plumpton Hunter (b. 1974) m. Emma L., dau. of Geoffrey Crabtree, of Bicknor Park, Hucking, Kent; their daughter, Alexandra Helena Elizabeth Ottilie de Plumpton Hunter, b. 6 April 2017.
I'm attempting to establish the exact descent from the Plumptons, the last of whom being Robert, whose death in 1749 led to the purchase of Plumpton (also 'Plompton') by Daniel Lascelles (from available info., presumably he 1714-1784, also of Goldsborough Hall, nr Knaresborough, Yorks., s. of the Barbados plantation owner Henry Lascelles, M.P.); Wikipedia has 'The estate was reacquired by the Plumpton family in the 20th century', which, given the first post here, I assume refers to these de Plumpton Hunters. Given the Plumptons held that land from the 12th century until the aforementioned sale, tracing the lineage would be interesting.
Frank Reginald Beck married in 1891 Mary Plumpton Wilson, dau. of Capt. Clifford Wilson, of the Connaught Rangers and 5th Northumberland Fusiliers. Google books seems to indicate members of this family appear in the Gilbert of Chedgrave pedigree in BLG 1921. Rev. John Denny Gilbert (1813-1879), of Manor House, Chedgrave, rector of Cantley, m. 1846, Florence Margaretta Franks ([1826]-1887), dau. of Rev. Plumpton Wilson, rector of Mowsley, Leics. [EDIT: Florence M. F. Wilson elder sister of Clifford Wilson- see below]
Clifford Wilson b. 1841; the 1870 birth record of Mary Plumpton Wilson gives mother as 'Caroline Cecil Clay'. Census records show his father, the aforementioned Rev. Plumpton Wilson (who m. 1825, Margaretta, dau. of George Margetts, Esq., of Wellingborough), was b. c. 1800 [at Colsterworth, Lincs.]; he d. 1876. His 1801 Colsterworth baptismal record gives parents as William Wilson and Ann. 'Suffolk Writers from the beginning until 1800', by Tony Copsey (2000), gives: 'Born at Colsterworth in Lincolnshire on 22 November 1799, son of William Wilson of Wexford, Ireland.' There is a 1798 marriage at Ackworth, Yorkshire of William Wilson and Anne Plumpton, which would seem likely to be the right one; for Anne's ancestry see as follows.
It appears that the Anne William Wilson married was a daughter of the Plumptons of Snaith, that being a branch of the Plumptons of Plumpton; a printed tree shows the 1746 death of Robert Plumpton (see above), last of the senior line, but showing also a line of descent from his great-grandfather's brother Edward that ended in the male line with the death of HIS great-grandson John Plumpton in 1825. A contributor identifies the omission of a generation in this tree, however: son of the 'Henry Plumpton, Minister of Snaith (1710)' [in which year he wrote his will] was another Henry [who fl. 1734], whose son was John (rector of N. Witham, m. Naomi Stevenson), and whose son John (who m. Ann Bowers and d. at Bath), in turn, was the last male of this line of Plumptons. A contributor states of the Wilsons: 'this family's connection with Plumpton was through John, who was grandson of the second Henry Plumpton of Snaith. ... He was born near Colsterworth in Lincolnshire on 28 February 1754/5. ... He became the surgeon to Colsterworth and in 1779 married Ann Bowers. ... he is recorded as the naval surgeon on HMS Ramillies in 1794, under Captain Henry Harvey during the engagements with the French during that year. I have not found a record for his death though the diary of the Rev Greaves of Little Linford, who knew the family, gives the date of 1795 in the West Indies. The date given in the Wilson pedigree of 1824 in Bath in Somerset appears to be incorrect. A John Plumpton of Bath did leave a will at that date but its contents show that this was a different person. His line through the Wilsons gave rise to a number of clergy, including an Archbishop of Canterbury, a Cambridge mathematician and some national sportsmen.' This is all corroborative, and based upon this it seems that he must be the father of Anne, who married William Wilson.
An image of a printed 'Pedigree of the Wilson Family' is also provided, which unfortunately cuts off at the point where the Plumptons of Snaith branch off (as above) from the main family. Despite the omission of a 'Henry' (see above) in the pedigree, no issue seems to be taken with the Plumptons of Snaith being a branch of the main family of Plumpton.
This document states Clifford Wilson to have married a 'Miss Matthews'; the 1866 marriage record at Jullundur, Bengal gives Clifford Wilson, s. of Plumpton Wilson, as marrying Caroline Cecil Clay Matthews (b. 1848), dau. of John Marcus Matthews; her baptismal record (at Fort William, Bengal) corroborates this, and gives her mother as Eliza Janette.
Thus it would appear that the descent of the de Plumpton Hunters from the Plumptons of Plumpton is as outlined above, with the only unconfirmed element being exactly which individual from the Snaith branch was father of the Anne Plumpton who married William Wilson (although based on the dates, the established and recognised link between the Plumptons and Wilsons, and the Colsterworth, Lincs. factor, it would appear to be John Plumpton, b. 1754/5); I suspect a fuller version of the clipped 'Pedigree of the Wilson Family' would have helped here, but sadly I'm not sure where it came from.
