He was s of Capt Ralph Richard ABEL SMITH (1903-97), sion of that gentry of Woodhall Park, and Olive Moreton (1905-70) d of James Hainsworth ISMAY (1867-1930), scion of that gentry family formerly of Dawlpool and his 2nd wife a scion of the DUCIE earls. He m 1965 Maureen Elizabeth (b 1938) d of George Brown KELLY formerly of Kakajan, Assam, India, and Adeline Bryson MACLEAN. No issue.
He shared a common Abel Smith ancestry with many members of the British peerage and gentry. To name but three of his numerous connections: The QUEEN and the Duchess of GRAFTON were his 5th cousins and he was Sir Henry ABEL SMITH'S 3rd cousin once removed. The latter of course was the son-in-law of Princess Alice Countess of Athlone (gd of Queen VICTORIA). I could list many, many, many more connections, but they'll all be obvious to you and are easily found elsewhere, so won't clutter up our website with them!
