The engagement is announced between James Walter, son of the Earl and
the Countess of Verulam, and Rosanagh Viola Alexandra eldest daughter
of the Duke of Roxburghe and Lady Jane Dawnay. Lady Jane is a daughter
of the 5th Duke of Westminster and her husband Edward is a grandson of
the 9th Viscount Downe, and a great grandson of the 1st Duke of
Westminster.

What a rarity these days-- a true aristocratic match!
Congratulations to the happy couple!

As you say, a true aristocratic match. It is interesting to note that
Lady Anne Dawnay married her own 3rd(?) cousin.

BTW 'Verulam' is another of those territorial designations of places
that don't exist.

The name Verulam derives from Verulamium, the Roman City which
preceded St. Albans. The sign displays the arms of the Earl of Verulam
who lives at Gorhambury close by the city. The first Earl, John Walter
Grimston received the title on the 24th of November 1815. The motto
Mediocria Firma (mediocrity is safe), was earlier used by the famous
philosopher, scientist and politician, Sir Francis Bacon (sometime
Baron Verulam) (1561-1626) who also lived at Gorhambury."

Always one to promote an Irish connection wherever possible, the Earl
of Caledon, who recently announced his engagements, is the great-great-
great grandfather of the 1st Earl of Verulam. Vague I know but that's
my tuppence worth!

Oops, as you can see I've cracked open the port early...The Earl of
Caledon is the great-great-great grandson of the 1st Earl of Verulam,
not his great-great-great grandfather. Apologies.

Yes, I know that, but it doesn't alter the fact that 'Verulam' as such
doesn't exist.

>Sir Francis Bacon (sometime Baron Verulam) (1561-1626) who also lived at Gorhambury."

He was also Viscount St Alban which confuses matters even
further....:)

Sir Francis Bacon,Viscount St.Alban and Baron Verulam is now

15th Baronet of Mildenhall[cr.1627],direct descendant of Sir Francis'

What a wonderful match. I had no idea that the heir to the Earl of
Verulam and Lady Rose were dating - her previous escorts have been
somewhat higher profile and she was photographed alone at several
recent (2004-2007) society weddings.

Who was the last duke's daughter to marry the heir to an earl? The
last duke's daughter to marry an earl (actual peerage) was Lady Rose's
maternal aunt Leonora, Countess of Lichfield (mother of the present
earl and ex-wife of the late earl, a photographer Patrick Lichfield).

However, he is not the duke of Roxburghe and thus not the father of
Rosanagh.

Richard Kay writes:

Life is sweet for Rosie

With her outfit matching her glittering emerald engagement ring, the
Duke of Roxburghe's socialite daughter Lady Rosanagh Innes-Ker was
radiant as she unveiled her fiance Viscount Grimston at a London party
the other night.

Rosie, 29 -- once tipped as a bride for Prince William -- got engaged at
New Year and is planning to marry this year. "We haven't finalised a
date,' she tells me. "But it will be in Scotland."

If Rosie, who works for Sotheby's, is still searching for a venue, she
could do worse than the magnificent Floors Castle near Kelso, where
Prince Andrew proposed to Sarah Ferguson and which, happily, is owned
by her fabulously wealthy father, Guy.

Her fiance James, 30, a merchant banker, is the eldest son of
Hertfordshire landowner, the Earl of Verulam, and is looking forward
to getting married north of the border as he is half- Scottish.

"I'll certainly be exposing my knees when I wear a kilt at my
wedding," he says.
