The Times carries an obituary for Field Marshal Lord Inge one of the few Field Marshals to be made a member of the Privy Council never mind a Knight of the Garter. By my calculation there are only 4 living Field Marshals (Duke of Kent, Prince of Wales , Lord Guthrie and Lord Walker )

Obit in the Times of 21 July 2022:

E X T R A C T
Field Marshal Lord Inge KG obituary
Former chief of the defence staff who could put the fear of God into his officers and was the last to serve in the rank of field marshal
...Peter Anthony Inge was born in Croydon in 1935, the only child of Raymond Inge, a businessman, and Grace du Rose. The family moved to Kent not long afterwards, and Inge went to Summerfields preparatory school in St Leonards-on-Sea, East Sussex. When his parents separated he went to live with his mother in the Lake District, and then to Wrekin College in Shropshire, known for its extensive grounds and playing fields, where he was a fast rugby winger, an accomplished cricketer and county-level quarter-miler...
...[he] met in Yorkshire Letitia (Tisha) Thornton-Berry [gentry family of Swinithwaite Hall], daughter of a barrister. They were married in 1960 once his tour as ADC ended. Tisha died in 2020, and he is survived by two daughters, Antonia, who married a Royal Navy officer, and Verity, who worked for several MPs in the House of Commons...
...He was ennobled on relinquishing the appointment in 1997, as is the practice still, and became an active member of the House of Lords, where he contributed with cogency and force in defence debates...
...Inge thoroughly enjoyed the fruits of his long service — the Garter, the ermine, the flat in Dolphin Square, the Long Room at Lord’s, lunch at Wiltons, dinner at Pratt’s — but he was perhaps most at home walking in his beloved Dales or reading history and military fiction of an evening. As a gregarious man and a much-admired officer, the onset of Alzheimer’s and consequent withdrawal from public life was a shock to all who had known his penetrating mind, sense of fun and love of the soldier.
The Rt Hon Field Marshal the Lord Inge of Richmond KG, GCB, DL was born on August 5, 1935. He died on July 20, 2022, aged 86

Interesting that that he's described as The Rt Hon Field Marshal. (Think I might have gone for "Field Marshal the Rt Hon" cf "Field Marshal HRH the Duke of Kent".)

Your instinct is right - "Field Marshal the Rt Hon ..." is correct.

They also call him (at the end) "the Lord Inge of Richmond", which is also incorrect (the territorial designation was "of Richmond in the County of North Yorkshire", but the title itself was just "Baron Inge"), so perhaps the sub-editor with knowledge of these things is on holiday.

so he resigned because of Alzheimer's?

Sadly, I think that may be right.  I was certainly told some years ago by people in Yorkshire, where he lived, that he was suffering from dementia, although the word "Alzheimer's wasn't specifically mentioned. He seems to be enormously liked and respected up there

Perhaps HM has made a conscious decision to not appoint any more?  To allow her successor to make appointments more relevant to him?  Earliest vacancy has been since October 2020.

With about 95% of the current Knight/Lady Companions being in their late 70s-90 yrs old, I would have thought there will be sadly quite a few more vacancies.

If she lives as long as Queen Elizabeth would be a long wait for new appointments

From the Times of 24 March 2023
The King was represented by the Duke of Kent, the Queen by General Sir Patrick Sanders, the Princess Royal by Marshal of the Royal Air Force Lord Stirrup KG, Princess Alexandra, the Hon Lady Ogilvy by the Duke of Abercorn KG, and the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester by Viscount Brookeborough KG, at a service of thanksgiving for the life and work of Field Marshal Lord Inge KG held on Thursday March 23, 2023 at St Margaret’s Church, Westminster Abbey.

The Duke of Kent's representing The King is also mentioned in the Court Circular for 23 March 2023.

Interesting that the reference is to "the Queen" and not to "the Queen Consort". I wonder if that was a slip or an early indication of an intention to phase out the latter.

The Court Circular though states "The Queen Consort was represented by Gen Sir Patrick Sanders"

I suspect the reports in the Times and the Telegraph are written either by their reporters who were present or from information provided by the organisers of the Memorial Service and so can't be considered official.  The Telegraph for example lists the representatives of the Royal Family with the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester (more correctly) before Princess Alexandra.  The Telegraph also refers to the Queen Consort rather than the Queen although I have noticed that more and more articles in the Telegraph refer to her as "the Queen" rather than the QC

Nobody seems to take the time to check such stuff.

Why should anyone check that? Both are correct!

But arguably not in that combination.
