Audrey Slaughter obituary
Flamboyant and pioneering editor of Honey magazine who was known in Private Eye as ‘the flame-haired temptress’
...[in] 1979 [she] married the journalist Charles Wintour, editor of the Evening Standard...
...Audrey Smith was born the fifth of six children born into a working-class family in Sidcup, Kent in 1929. Her father, Frederick, was a warehouseman who later became a travelling salesman for a toy company. Her mother was Nellie, née Hatt.
...At the age of 19 she married a man 15 years older than her, principally to escape her family. Wally Slaughter, an investment manager. Her father whispered to her as she entered the church on her wedding day that she did not have to go through with it. “I wanted to say to him: ‘save me.’ But I kept thinking of all the expense and the bridesmaids, who had been chosen by my mother, and the reception and everything. So I married and had a nervous breakdown a year afterwards.”
The couple had two children, who recalled one morning when Slaughter delivered them to Wetherby Prep School near Gloucester Road in London. She kissed them goodbye and as she drove away caught sight of them in the wing mirror sitting forlornly on the school steps. She had been too busy to notice that it was half-term. Michael was until recently a business consultant for the European Union; and Sally works in recruitment. Both survive her.
She and her first husband divorced in the late 1960s...
...In 2002 she married Dennis Lanigan, global managing director of the advertising agency JWT. [He] died in 2009.
