While perusing through The Complete Peerage a month or so ago, I was struck by a question. How difficult would it have been for the editors and compilers of the work to alphabetize peerages and create their respective articles while editing the work as a whole? I was then struck by the idea it would be rather useful (and rather fun) to see all peerages (whether substantive or subsidiary) in alphabetical order in the peerage of the United Kingdom 1801-2021. The result is the document attached below that places every title in the peerage of the United Kingdom 1801-2021 in alphabetical order.
I perused through Beamish’s excellent site and typed up each title individualy with its territorial designation, exact date of creation and exact date of extinction or end status. I am still working on the exact alphabetical order and proof reading the document so titles with “St” or “Mc” or “Mac” will be found as they are in strict alphabetical order (rather than being treated as “Saint” or “Mac” for sake of completeness). The surname of each current or last holder is at the end of each entry.
As a side note, I am working on a similar list for peerages of Great Britain and those of Ireland. These will be ready at a later date and will serve as a companion to the chronological list of peerage creations 1483-2021 I am working on (well I have typed up the titles in chronological order so all that remain are the various details) and will be available under the collective title of Honorem Genealogicum at a later date.
If anyone is interested in learning a bit more about the other projects I am working on, I would be happy to take questions or discuss things further if anyone is interested.
