Nigel McNair Scott obituary

Gregarious businessman whose property enterprise made a fortune that he then injected into the space industry

… Nigel Guthrie McNair Scott was born in 1945, the fifth child of Major Ronald McNair Scott. His mother, Mary, was the eldest daughter of the first Viscount Camrose, proprietor of The Daily Telegraph (always known as Poppa in the nursery). In Nigel’s babyhood the family moved to Huish, an estate bordering the Camrose stately home, Hackwood Park in Hampshire.

All fair in appearance, they were intensely literate: Major Ronnie wrote biographies of his heroes Alfred the Great and Robert the Bruce. Two of Nigel’s older sisters, Linda and Valerie, later published books — the latter, who died in January, married Thomas Pakenham.

They remained close to their many Berry cousins, and were conscious of the newspaper empire heritage. It was a sadness to them all when, in 1985, the Telegraph had to be sold to Conrad Black. The children grew up in a conventional upper-class, almost Mitfordesque rural environment. Their father was for a time a master of foxhounds, though his sons never cared for foxhunting. There was a lot of shooting, at which Nigel excelled.

He was educated at Eton, where he was a scholar and attained six A-levels, then Christ Church, Oxford, which he left with a second in PPE and the most important relationship of his life. He met Anna Colquhoun, daughter of an Eton housemaster studying at Lady Margaret Hall, when she was sharing a flat in Fyfield Road with Sarah Boyd-Carpenter, today Baroness Hogg, who became a lifelong friend. Thereafter, though his wit attracted admirers, he never looked seriously at another woman. He and Anna were married in 1968 and enjoyed a seemingly perfect partnership, not least at the bridge table…

He moved back to Hampshire, taking over the Huish estate on his father’s death in 1995. Anna served for 20 years on Hampshire county council. It delighted them both when McNair Scott became 2011-12 high sheriff simultaneously with his wife assuming the council chairmanship…

… Anna survives him with their four sons. Robert is a company director in Canada; Alastair is a sustainability consultant; David is a tech entrepreneur and director of Reaction Engines; and Benjamin is a Church of England priest and chaplain of St Catherine’s School, Bramley, in Surrey, who has published a book on Christian apostolates…

…He commanded a wide circle of friends, some dating back to Eton and Oxford, others to his country life both in England and the Highlands, to which he travelled every August.

Nigel McNair Scott, businessman, was born on September 6, 1945. He died of a brain aneurysm after a fall on April 7, 2023, aged 77
