I don't pretend to know anything about Scottish clan chieftainships,
except that Lord Lyon has become strict about clan chiefs using their
clan surnames if they want to be recognized as chiefs. Since I read
the article a long time back, I don't remember who was recognized as
Chief of Clan Chattan in her place. I think that Clan Chattan had a
Mackintosh as its head (the two clans being united).
Thus some interesting name changes for certain peers
(Montagu-Douglas-Scott to Montagu Douglas Scott, with the last being
the official surname of the Duke of Buccleuch and his heir). A lack of
name changes for others (as in Douglas-Home) creates a mess - at least
two different peers - the Earl of Morton (Douglas) and the Earl of Home
(Douglas-Home) - are claiming chieftainship of the Douglas clan ,
although I don't think it has been a united clan for a very long time
beginning with the Red and Black Douglases). The patrilineal heir male
is the Duke of Hamilton, but he is also neither fish nor fowl, being a
Douglas-Hamilton, and thus unable to claim chieftainship of either
clan.
