The marriage took place on September 15th, 2007, between Alexander,
elder son of Viscount and Viscountess Trenchard, of Standon Lordship,
Herts and Mira, daughter of the late Herr Rainer Ostendorf and of Frau
Hannelore Popken, of Hamburg, Germany.

OK, I'm a little confused.

The headline says "Miss A. Popken." However, the bride's first name
is "Mira." Also, she used her mother's last name as her last name?

Richard (or anyone) -- help!

Thanks.

I thought the 'Popken' bit was a bit strange, but assumed that her
birth father died young and that she assumed the name of her mother's
subsequent husband. I'm fairly :) careful when transcribing
announcements from The Times, and can only assume that Mira is a
diminutive of another name, perhaps 'Almira'. Will try to find the
definitive answer...

Cheers

Brooke,

I was just sent the following from a friend in Germany (thank you
Oliver):

'Popken is a family name (located Emden, Oldenburg) derived from
Popke,
Poppe. According to actual german law a married woman can retain her
family name; presumably Popken is the maiden name of Mrs. Ostendorf.
If
Mira was born illegitimate her family name would automatically be that
of
her mother. Off course it would change after adoption.
According to german phone books a Hannelore Popken is living in
Hamburg.'

Thanks, Richard, for trying to clarify...

I think it would have been easier if the Hon. Mr. Trenchard just
married someone named Jane Smith!

You're right; very inconsiderate of him!
