I received an email today from a correspondent which, under the heading of "Earl of Carrick (Ireland)", says "you may not know that David Carrick, whom you list as the last of the above title, died about a year ago."

I was not aware of this, nor do I recall ever seeing it posted within this group. Anyone have any further information?

I was not a member of this group when the Earl of Carrick died, but he
did in January 2008 (aged 55). His son, (Arion) Thomas Piers Hamilton
Butler has been the 11th Earl of Carrick since then. I don't know if
the new earl is married or has children, but he is now 35 years old
and does have 2 younger brothers.

I know his obituary was published in the Daily Telegraph, but darned
if I can pull it up now.. otherwise, I'd provide you with a link.

I can't find anything in the News UK newspaper archive, plus the
Telegraph is usually good at archiving its articles online and
searchable with Google. The current online edition of Who's Who also
suggests the 10th earl is still alive.

This is one that has passed us by, well I have contacted Debretts and
will see what they have to say.

Apparently he was a member of St. Gregory's Society (Old Gregorians).
Their website lists his name in their 2008-2009 Obituaries.

It's listed as: The Earl of Carrick (C70) in January 2008 aged 55.

Yes it has just been confirmed to me by Charles Kidd that the late
earl died of cancer in January of 2008

I read something earlier that listed the day as 8 January. The source
listed for the date was Debrett's.. just in case this is to be updated
on your website, Leigh.
So he was technically 54 yrs old. His birthday would have been 9
January. So sad :(

If the 11th Earl is unmarried, which one of his younger twin brothers--
Hon. Piers or Hon. Lindsay-- is the heir presumptive?

Thanks.

I think that would be the Hon. Lindsay Simon Butler.. but as
previously stated, I have no idea if the 11th Earl is married or has
children. If he already has a son then neither of his brothers could
be his heir apparent.

Thanks Isabelle

I have now received a further note from my correspondent who states that he
received a letter from the late Earl's former wife, Philippa, about a month
after the Earl's death. Apparently he died in Norfolk (if his memory serves
him correctly) on 8 Jan 2008, the day before his 55th birthday.

Hello All,

I hope you are well.

I have just come across this Google Group and thought I could help. I am Piers Butler, the son of 10th Earl of Carrick. David did pass away on the 8th of Jan 2008, the day before his 55th birthday.
My older brother, Thomas Piers Hamilton Butler, is now the 11th Earl of Carrick, he has a wife a two daughters.

Thanks for that Piers. I take it you're currently the heir to the title? It would be very useful to have your sister-in-law's name incl family name, and the names & dates of birth of your nieces. That information is not available anywhere else.

Good evening to all members of this group,

I am writing to inquire about the current Earl of Carrick, Mr. Arion Thomas Piers Hamilton Butler.

As part of an academic research project, I am currently conducting an investigation related to one of the Earl’s ancestors. I noticed that Mr. Butler’s brother, the Hon. Piers Butler, participated in this group some time ago.

In this context, I would greatly appreciate it if you could let me know whether it might be possible to establish contact with Mr. Butler. Alternatively, I would be grateful if you could forward my request or advise me on the appropriate procedure to do so. I attempted to reply to his post, but it appears the group’s settings do not allow for that action.

Please rest assured that my inquiry is made with the utmost respect and arises from a sincere academic interest in the historical and cultural heritage associated with the title and family.

Kind regards, and thank you in advance

Hello Richard,

That is correct, I am the current heir to the title unless this Bill goes through the House of Commons and then onto the Lords: https://bills.parliament.uk/bills/2364 although this was raised on the 13th of March 2019 and hasn't progressed much. If the Bill does go through, I would assume Thomas' (11th Earl of Carrick) eldest daughter, Lucy, would be the heir to the title(s).

- Lucy Butler, born on the 28th of March, 2007
- Molly Butler, born on the 3rd of November, 2009

I currently have one daughter:

- Elsa Butler, born on the 11th of February, 2013

Lindsay Butler is currently childless. If the above Bill isn't passed, I will inherit the title for a brief period, and then I am not sure who will inherit the title after me. Any information on this would be greatly appreciated and very interesting for me.

Warm regards
Piers Butler

Hello Piers,

The 2019 bill was lost with the general election that year; its successor in 2024 was lost with the 2024 election  - see https://bills.parliament.uk/bills/3561. I imagine another version will be introduced in the present parliament, but don't know the state of the campaign presently.

After Lindsay next in line is Piers Somerset Patrick Butler (born 1970) great-grandson of the 7th Earl.

Thanks Loopy (if I may be so familiar) - I see that Piers S P Butler's father died in 2020 so have posted a note of his death as I don't think it was generally known
