Reading about the death of Baron Elton, it did seem to me like we have seen an unusually high number of peerage deaths so far this year.

With 2023, not even three quarters complete, so far, this group has recorded the following peerage deaths:

3rd Baron Hemingford
18th Marquess of Winchester (actually died in 2016)
Baroness (16th in line) Berners
5th Baron Churston
3rd Baron MacAndrew
29th Earl of Crawford and 12th Earl of Balcarres
18th Earl of Perth
5th Viscount Gough (title extinct)
3rd Viscount Knollys
3rd Baron Kirkwood
6th Baron Strathspey
18th Lord Inchiquin
8th Earl Cadogan
3rd Viscount Tenby
8th Baron Harris
8th Baron Bolton
13th Earl of Airlie
4th Baron Baden-Powell
4th Baron Palmer
3rd Baron Bradbury
5th Baron Lawrence (title extinct)
2nd Baron Milverton
2nd Baron Elton

Hemingford actually died Dec 2022.  You missed 7th Baron Camoys, who died early January.

As always I am keeping track - I might work on some sort of numerical tracking by month/year to make it easier to see outliers.

Hi Henry.

Thanks for these two catches.  With regards to Hemingford, I had written in my notes, at the time, that he could have died in early Jan. 2023, but you're right, he actually died in mid Dec. 2022.  As for Camoys,  my notes said it had been posted here  in early January, but I don't think I had written down an actual date of death for him.

So excluding Winchester and now Hemingford, but including Camoys,  I believe that makes 22 hereditary peerage deaths, which does seem high for a non-war year, and with still 3 and 1/2 months to go.  I guess it's not  too surprising , as many of the peers are over 80.

Four months still to go in 2023.The other side of the coin is that the numbers reaching 90 seem to be increasing every year

According to unterstein.net, there are 38 peers and peeresses who were at least 90 (born 1933 and earlier), but that list includes the last two who died, Milverton and Elton.

Out of the remaining 36, the oldest is the only centenarian, Lord Saye and Sele, born 1920.

Brooke, you are correct to say that 2023 is not going to be a good year for the hereditary peers - 22 deaths so far already beats the deaths in the whole year for all of 2017 to 2022 inclusive.

I compiled the above tables from my records of deaths which I have maintained for a few years: Peerage & Baronetage deaths & births

Whilst this year is not going well for the peers, only 11 baronets have their death recorded so far this year, so they may be on for a recent low in the number of baronet deaths.

Hi Henry.

Thanks for actually putting it all in perspective.  It has seemed to me that I'm reading about a hereditary peer dying almost every third of fourth day.

Interesting note about the baronets.   I wonder what the actual average age for them is compared with the hereditary peers.

Thanks again, Henry.

Pattern seems to be that there is at least one centenarian at any given time

Of the 712 non-peer baronets listed by Kershaw, 40 are over 90 or will turn 90 this year

My apologies - there are 951 non-peer baronets according to Stephen Kershaw's listing in July 2023
