Hon Peter Alistair Ward 1926-2008)

The Hon Peter Ward, who died at his home, 24 March, 2008, was a scion
of the Earls of Dudley (UK 1860), and was a younger son of the 3rd
Earl of Dudley (1894-1969), by his 1st wife Lady Rosemary Millicent
Sutherland-Leveson-Gower (who died as the result of an accident 1930),
daughter of the 4th Duke of Sutherland. Peter Alistair Ward was born
in 1926, ws educated at Eton and the Univs of British Columbia and
Christ Church, Oxford; Chairman of Baggeridge Brick plc 1943-45;
served in World War II with Royal Canadian Air Force, and Fleet Air
Arm; married 1stly, 1956 (div 1974) Claire Leonora Baring, scion of
the Barons Ashburton, dau of Amyas Baring. Claire Ward was the love
for several decades of Viscount Lambton (the disclaimed Earl of
Durham); Peter Ward married 2ndly, 1974, Elizabeth Rose Westmacott,
descended from the Barons St Oswald, dau of Richard Victor Charles
Westmacott. From the first marriage he leaves a son, Alexander b 1961;
and a daughter, Rachel Claire, b 1957, an actress, who married the
Marquess of Worcester, heir to the 11th Duke of Beaufort; and from the
2nd union he leaves 2 sons, Jeremy b 1975, and Benjamin b 1978. His
elder brother, the 4th Earl of Durham survives. The funeral will be
held at St. Mary's Church, Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire, 14 April
2008.

is another daughter, also an actress, b 1957, married to the
Australian-born actor

The accident in 1930 which killed Peter Ward's mother also killed the
3rd Marquess of Dufferin and Ava:

On July 21, 1930 Lord Dufferin was flying with a party of friends from
Berck, a small village in France near Le Touquet, back to England when
the plane crashed outside Meopham, Kent, killing all those on board.
The others in the party were Sir Edward Simons Ward, Bt.; Viscountess
Ednam, the wife of Viscount Ednam (heir to the Earl of Dudley and a
daughter of Cromartie Sutherland-Leveson-Gower, 4th Duke of
Sutherland); and Mrs Loeffler, a well-known society hostess, along
with the pilot, Lt. Col. George Lochart Henderson and the assistant
pilot, Mr C. D. Shearing.
