Out of the 27 who would it be? Manchester seems to have no real money
and St Albans has had no seat for ages, though I did once read in the
Times Rich list book of 1990 that he was a millionaire accountant.
Athol is also a possibility as all the estates were left to a half
sister of the last duke, though he does have a set of apartments in
the family seat, but is has been reported that the last duke did not
like the way he eyed up things when he came for a visit from S Africa.

What about Kent and Gloucester?

As younger sons the first Dukes may not have inherited much. Do they
have estates?

They must be certainly poorer than a good many of the old Ducal lines

Not sure about Kent and Gloucester, but I would have thought that
Manchester would be poorer than either of them. But as you say they
don't own any estates that I know of, but then again neither does St
Albans though he is a patron of two livings.

Would there be any other contenders?

The list seems to be as follows:

Manchester
Kent
Gloucester
St Albans

What about Somerset? I didn't think he was that rich.

What about York does he have much money?

Well Somerset owns two stately homes Berry Pomeroy and Maiden Bradley
and about 18,000 around the Devon area, he was featured on the Times
Rich List about 15 years ago, so I safely think that he can be
excluded from this discussion.

What about the Duke of Leinster?

They lost most of there property and wealth.

Oh yes the duke before the present one sold his interests in
everything I remember there being a very good Obit of the Duchess of
that duke in which it stated that he was reduced to living in a flat
in Pimlico. Lenister is a tragic dukedom and hanging on a thread now
too just like Westminster.

The Times wills reported over a million for the late duke (son of the
one who sold his interests). he did own a flight school i remember. i
would go with Manchester. The previous duke was in prison for fraud in
florida and the current duke had some brief connection with michael
jackson. also somerset sold maiden bradley i believe and was only
credited with 2000 acres in who owns britain, but still probably worth
a bit.

Maiden Bradley has not been sold it is still owned by the current
duke, Berry Pomeroy is managed by English Heritage and the up keep is
done by them though it is still owned by the duke. I am not sure about
the two thousand acres, that who owns Britain seems to be a bit sparse
on some of its info and seems to be better at telling us what people
owned one hundred and thirty five years ago. I would suggest that you
consult the Times Rich list from the mid nineties as to the acreage
unless someone living locally can give us some more up to date info?

Still, a flat in Pimlico is likely to cost more than most of us would
want to spend on accommodations. :-)

LOL! I recall reading this as well in the obituary of the previous
duke, a colorful character who alas remained unmarried. I think the
late duke was sizing up his successor (and the latter's heir) and did
not like either.

Leinster and St Albans are still considered the most poor in the
stakes of Dukes in the UK.

Manchester also can be added to the list.. with less then 5 million
pounds.

I don't know if you can treat Kent, Gloucester and York in these
circles yet !! York still hasn't inherited his parents as they are
still alive. Kent and Gloucester will eventually be classed as poor
dukes I believe once the HRH Dukes have passed on.. When they have to
survive on their own backs.
